This is why they did the trade for a 4th rounder. They want to be active in free agency, and when you are active, you lose the compensatory equalizer. Brian has proven he is active, and this is a move that supports it moving forward. BE HAPPY.

Some teams are willing to trade for a short-term rental, knowing they can always get a compensatory pick for them if the player leaves in free agency. But in discussing yesterday's deal of safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to Washington for a fourth-round pick, Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst effectively declared himself open for business in [more]

“We’d like to be active in free agency, and if we’re active in free agency, that affects the compensatory process,” Gutekunst said,

Packers G.M.: Free agent strategy factored into trade

Hmm this defense needs coverage guys which means more FS who at times can handle one on one coverage duties some FS FAs in 2019 include
LaMarcus Joyner
Earl Thomas
Kareem Jackson

If fully healthy, I think Thomas would great for this defense, though Cowboys want him and he has always wanted to be a Cowboy so would have to overpay them)

Also need an edge guy with Matthews/Wilkerson both being a FAs
Ezekiel Ansah
DeMarcus Lawrence
Clay Matthews
Cameron Wake
Brian Orakpo
Derrick Morgan
Brandon Graham
Allen Bailey
Jadeveon Clowney
Terrell Suggs
Julius Peppers
Muhammad Wilkerson
Shaquil Barrett
Shane Ray
Chris Long
Margus Hunt
Dee Ford

It's been said that Pettine likes bigger OLBers like Perry and Gilbert for his system over smaller/thinner guys like Biegel and Fackrell... and we even put in a claim for 270 4-3 DE Anthony Zettel... not sure if he would of been a 3-4 OLB of 3-4 DE but seems like they've been looking for 3-4 OLB.

With the bigger size (and hype) in mind... Jadeveon Clowney?

Only concern with Clowney is his inconsistency. We just got rid of a guy who only shows up every other snap.

Clowney will cost you some big bucks, though.

We already have $150.000.000 of cap room tied up in the 39 guys we're slated to have on the roster next year. I know there's some room to renegotiate, guys like Tramon Williams who you can cut without taking too much of a cap hit and that the cap will most likely increase a bit, but it doesn't really look like we've got a ton of cash to work with.

For every guy like Cobb, Matthews and Wilkerson (+$29 million in cap space next year), there's a Rodgers (-$5,6 million), Graham (-$6,7 million), Linsley (-$3,3 million) or Perry (-$4 million) eating up a lot of that room.

I’m not so sure you’re going to see Graham back next year...at least not at that salary. Further, I would not be at all surprised to see Wilkerson back on a relatively inexpensive deal.

As far as I am concerned, Linsley is a must have. I also wish they would stop going Kmart at offensive guard, and spend some dollars there. This would greatly enhance our running game particularly in short yardage situations, and situations where you need to get out of your own End-zone!!

beast (8-Aug) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (8-Aug) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔
dfosterf (8-Aug) : Apparently it is too complicated for several to follow your simple instructions, but I digress
