On the other hand, LT, you would come cheap, so perhaps we should call Ted Thompson after all. I could play Bus Cook to your Jay Cutler. :D

I'm not sure, but as LT's representative, I would advise him to keep the dissatisfied professional athlete's mantra ever on his lips: "It's not about the money."

I'm not going to take what coaches and personnel scouts have to say that seriously between now and the draft. I don't think the Packers want teams knowing they're targeting a specific type of player for their picks. I would say they probably are, but they rather keep everyone guessing as usual.

Clearly, Green Bay is doing more than just changing the coaches. I think players who don't fit will be gone sooner rather than later. This is a scheme change no doubt.

Well, it's obviously a scheme change. I don't think anyone is saying it's not. I also don't think anyone thinks that some players won't fit. I'm just trusting that Dom knows what he is doing and will field at least an average defense this season with the potential for an above average defense at worst over the next few seasons. I remember liking him along with many others here when he was in Carolina. I just think that he's no idiot and that he knows what he's doing. It's not the first time he has been through a scheme change.

Maybe I'm having blind faith, but that's the disposition I choose to take at this time until I am proven wrong. Of course I have a tendency to give the Green Bay Packers the benefit of the doubt, I'm a fan . . . . and am always hoping for the best.

Off topic here, but does anyone remember how many free agents were brought into Jacksonville the first season Dom made the scheme change there? Might be interesting to know.

I think you might be missing my viewpoint, I have a ton of faith in Dom and company in putting this defense together quickly. Okay, maybe a little less faith iin Winston Moss, lol.

With that said, I can see certain player with their style of play struggling to adapt to new roles or assignments.

For example, Barnett, unless they can teach him effectively how to pass rush or effectively shed a block I see him struggling in a 3-4 alignment.

Guy has all the physical traits and tools to be effective in any defense, he just doesn't play like it. Can the new coaching staff "coach" him up.. possibly, but generally a player of his tenure in the league is what he is.

And I don't see anything wrong with giving such an opinion or basing discussion upon it.

Quite honestly, that is the biggest question of this particular off season.

With that said, I truly believe if Dom sees in camp post draft issues with the personnel and effectively playing a 3-4, but sees enough talent to warrant it, that he will run a morphed hybrid system using the strengths of his roster, even if it isn't conventional. I have that much faith in Dom's talents as a Defensive Coach.

1. I guess I don't have a problem w/ the thread title, but I'm thick-skinned like that. I do think it's just as valid to post that you have faith that the coaches know what they're doing as it is to post that you've got some questions about different players' fit for the new scheme - they're different sides of the same coin, really.

2. I would have been concerned about our defensive personnel without a scheme switch - Harrell's inability to get on the field and Jolly's disappearing act (and looming off-field problems) turned what we all thought was a good trade into the prelude to a disaster, defensively speaking. So, at the end of last season I had the following concerns on 😨

- Lack of depth on the D line to soften the blow of an injury like Jenkins'.

- I do not feel now, and never have felt that Poppinga is an effective player - I've felt we were missing a LB for the last couple years.

- I was a little worried about depth @ safety, for obvious reasons.

I'm not nearly as worried about who can play in what system as I am that we just don't have enough quality players at some positions. What I'm really hoping is that the scheme change itself solves some of our problems by being a better fit for guys who didn't look great in our previous scheme (e.g. Jeremy Thompson, Lansanah). I do still think we need more quality bodies on the DL, regardless of the scheme - until Harrell proves he can get his ass on the field, we need some help there.

I think an average defense plus a great offense can win you the division this year. I agree with the average expectations as something to possibly set the standards for. The problem I see is so far Green Bay has the exact same players they did last year plus Anthony Smith. Thats not going to cut it when youre playing a new defense in my opinion. The draft is going to have to be solid right away and Dom Capers is going to have to do one hell of a coaching job for this defense to improve any in my opinion.

I agree. As long as our defense is DECENT this year, we should be able to win the division. I'm trying to remain optimistic that we can field a decent defense. There's really no excuse not too, especially with one of the best secondaries in the league, considering the lack of pressure up front. If we can manage ANY kind of consistent pass rush and run stopping ability, I think our defense will be fine for this year. There's really no reason to believe it can't be either from our 2007 season.

Now let's just hope it happens.

I think Capers is going to put in a Hybred defense built to stop the run first and then put the personnel in a position to be successful getting to the Qb out of multiple schemes.

What that tells me is in many cases we will be seeing Kampman coming from the left and Jenkins from the right with a wild-card blitzer often coming from who knows where.

I also like the idea of a speed rusher coming from Jenkins side because if he doesn't have two guys on him either he OR the outside rusher should be able to get the QB moving. That will allow Kampman to gobble the QB up. This is opposite of what happend after Jenkins went down and we could not get any backside pressure. The double went on Kampman and we got no pressure from anybody.

If we do draft a pass rushing OLB he could start off in there on obvious long yardage passing downs and work him into more as time goes.

The key is getting the doubles off of Kampman and Jenkins, or, having somebody coming there where they have to take the double off and if the OL don't get off them fast enough somebody gets a free shot.

I think these are the types of schemes Capers will devise to put his top players in a position to be able to make plays.

It's football. Read, react, and follow your assignments. Capers is not going to change the WORLD for crying out loud and I believe he is right in that we have guys that can make plays and he can come up with ways to for them to do just that.
