Packers awarded pass rusher James Hearns off waivers, per report

The Packers will take a look at undrafted rookie pass rusher James Hearns, previously of the Cowboys. Even weeks into training camp, the Green Bay Packers continue to fiddle with their 90-man roster. On Saturday, the team successfully claimed pass James Hearns , according to ESPN’s Field Yates .
Hearns , a 6-foot-2, 265-pound pass rusher from Louisville, went undrafted this past April, eventually signing with the Dallas Cowboys in May. The Cowboys waived him to make room for Joby Saint Fleur , leaving Hearns available for any team willing to place a claim.
As the Packers’ roster already stands at 90 players, they will need to make a corresponding move in order to open up a spot for Hearns. With starting middle linebacker Jake Ryan set to miss the 2018 season after tearing an ACL last week, the team could place him on injured reserve and officially bring Hearns into the fold. Green Bay could instead decide to cut a player elsewhere, though that appears less likely.
Hearns spent five years at Louisville, amassing 101 tackles (28 for loss) and 17.5 sacks. Hearns finished his redshirt senior season tied for the team lead in sacks with seven.

I could be wrong, but I don't think many if any UDFAs would be released by another team and then suddenly looks great enough to make it suddenly on the Packers, but if he shows well then maybe he could get a shot on the PS. Though the way a player can suddenly be better is to be used in a different but better way for his skill set the Packers might be using him differently in their 3-4 than the 4-3.

Also I find it interesting he was 239 lbs at the combine and then depending where you look, gained to 249 to 265 (10 to 26 lbs) to play 4-3 DE for the Cowboys. In college it looks like he was asked to play 3-4 DE, 4-3 DE and 3-4 OLB.
