I'm probably wrong here but I see Nick Foles as a very good and on the verge of great QB. Eagles didn't just get by with him. They thrived with him. Carson Wentz is a big time player too. Eagles made some good decisions along the way through some years of struggle. Packers fans don't put up with any prolonged moments of struggle so they're less inclined to see that most of these rosters took several years of disappointment and higher draft picks to get there.

However I'm with Darkane on this one. Nick Foles was a great backup and average starter, but that team doesn't get the 1 seed without Wentz and his outstanding qb play.

It's still a qb driven league. Pay Rodgers now or we'll regret it later.

That's just the thing.

There seems to be a new paradigm emerging. The previous paradigm was that of changing the rules to promote the offensive passing game, so the QBs came to the fore. Franchises centered their teams around the QB.

Now there appears to be a paradigm emerging where, the rules of offense have made it so easy that you don't NEED a HoF QB. You can get by with Case Keenum, Kirk Cousins or Nick Foles. Look what happened to the Legion of Boom when they had to pay Russell Wilson. The new question is, wouldn't it be better to keep all those dominant defensive players than it would be to pay that ONE guy?

Especially if the rules have changed so much that you don't need that ONE guy.

Drew Breese just signed a 2 year 50mil deal.

Teams are not looking to "just get by".

They are locking up "Their guy(s)" because:

You either have your franchise qb, or you're looking for your franchise qb .

Pay Aaron now!

On Rodgers last extension he averaged 22m/y which was about 18% of the 2013 salary cap. 18% of this years NFL base salary cap is 31m. That's not now it works out in reality because of structure but just something to keep in mind with all these big numbers is that the salary cap overall has exploded the last few seasons. Interestingly the highest actual cap % we spent on QBs during Rodgers previous contract was in 2014 when he was MVP and as a team GB spent the 2nd highest cap % on defense of any team.

Rodgers contracts haven't been hurting this team because he generally performs up to them. The bad/injured/underperforming defensive contracts have hurt a lot more along with Capers' fragile defensive scheme.

I'm not on the Carson Wentz is elite train. I like him, just not enthralled with him like it seems some are -- I need to see progression and repeated success. When your backup wins the Super Bowl MVP, after winning multiple games, including all playoff games ... I lean towards a great system for a QB to succeed in. The Wentz hype feels like Collin Kaepernick all over again, except I think Wentz is a better QB. So many were calling Kaepernick great, elite, the next HoF'er or whatever after he played something like 10 games. Anyhow, to the topic here.

Aaron Rodgers is under contract for 2018 (34) and 2019 (35) and set to be a free agent at age 36 in 2020. If the Packers let his contract expire and franchise him twice, I'd be fine. He'd be 38 years old and Packers would be off the hook. I would also be fine with the Packers giving him a five year $100 million contract that's fully guaranteed too or a 10 year $200 million contract knowing full well he's gonna retire or decline dramatically in his early 40's. If you do the math with assuming he plays 5-7 years more, that gives him a high average per active playing year salary, while not killing the Packers salary cap and giving him guaranteed cash. And if he doesn't decline much, it's a win for the Packers.

I would therefore prefer that no contract takes place unit after at least a few games into next season and very much disagree with the "Pay Aaron now!" camp.

150 million over 5 years (30 mil per) and 100 mil guaranteed is what Matt Ryan signed for this off-season. Does anyone believe Rodgers will accept less than that? I'd love if Rodgers signed for 5/100 but imo that's just not realistic.

The longer this drags out more qbs sign even bigger deals and the cost goes up even further.

Which is good AND bad. We haven’t had to have a total overhaul. Although with the new coaches and systems put in, that may just put us over the top.

Now.....I can see AR is still under contract, and we could make him play it out and franchise him. But do we really want to do that and tick him off? Do you want your best chance at a title feeling undervalued? I hate us having to pay out ridiculous money, but the alternative is not very good. Having a moping “Star”.

I can’t judge the guy on the Carolina game. It was his first game back after injury, and wasn’t even 100% healed.
He HAD to be thinking “if I get hit on it, will it snap, ending my career?”
A training camp, and preseason, should remedy those fears.

Rodgers signed his contract extension in 2013 but it didn't kick in until 2015. People have been talking about the fact that other players would eventually get paid more than him even though he is the better player before the ink was dry. Aaron isn't stupid. He knew that would happen from the get go. I doubt he has wasted 30 seconds sitting around pouting about not getting the biggest pile of gold. It is very boring when media types pretend to worry about Aaron's emotional state when it comes to his contract. 99% of them have never even talked to Aaron about it. Those that do probably have not been given a clear, and concise answer. At best Aaron gives half and vague replies because it's really not their business and Aaron isn't spending hours every day pining away over his paycheck or the lack thereof.
