Just another reason to be ultra cautious with the spending.. albeit, spending zero might be extreme..

The Pushback

The NFL denial stage is over and owners/players have seen this moment coming for years. While some teams have been preparing, others have not. And much like the grasshopper and the ant story, there will be some who survive the storm while others will suffer. Think this is an impossibility? Dont count on it. Its already here; you just dont know it yet. So here it comes: the pushback.

In short, NFL teams are going to be less profitable on a relative basis in the future, and player salaries are going to be adjusted downward in a big way. You might say the cap is larger next year and then theres an uncapped year, so how is that remotely possible? Lets take a look how some teams have already been preparing for this.

Try to connect these dots Dallas stadium, Gillette Stadium, Dolphin Stadium, Jets/Giants Stadium, most future stadiums.

What do they have in common? They all have, or are located next to, or are going to build a shopping mall or stores. Why do that? Its a logical solution for owners to ensure that their real estate investments are not dormant for six months of the year and the money they earn from them doesnt go to the players. Owners are fed up paying 60 percent of their revenue to the players, and their game day revenues are not growing at the same rate as the players salaries. Their risk/reward profiles are out of whack.

And now take a look at the economy. America has been growing the past 15-plus years (probably more) on the backbone of cheap debt. Americans are over-leveraged, they overspend and under-produce. (Driven a Ford lately? I have. Oh boy). Peoples budgets have been stretched, and they are now realizing their house cant be used as an ATM machine. What does that mean? Less spending. Period.

Yeah, but I highly doubt Lambeau gets ANY of the revenue. That was the point of the shopping centers in the new stadiums was to continue generating revenue all year.

I know we have the pro shop, curly's, and the hall of fame, but that doesn't seem like a whole lot.

Let's hope it is!

One of the reasons for the renovation was to make Lambeau Field a year round attraction. It's open nearly every day. I'm willing to bet folks going to the local stores stop in from time to time and eat there or buy something. And more so than the other way, folks going to Lambeau Field for whatever will go to the surrounding stores.

They each help one another and of course Lambeau Field does more of the helping others than vice versa.

Of course it helps. That's rhetorical. Many stadiums are in the middle of their respective cities and have thousands of people in their vincinity everyday. I don't think anyone is doubting that.

I still think the point of the article was talking about the newer stadiums having much larger shopping "malls" and such in them, perhaps with even theaters and such? That way, everyone of those shops not only have to pay to lease the spot, but the pro shop and state of the art stadium facilities also get the extra traffic.

In my opinion, most people going to Lambeau field are Packer fans to some extent, not just shoppers looking for a new pair of shoes. Fortunately, the Packers are lucky for having such a great fan base of people constantly wanting new merchandise and tours. However, that may not be the case for these other stadiums and I feel that's what the article was trying to say. Organizations are looking to branch out in ways that keep people coming through their stadiums, and hopefully spending money, football fans or not.

Being next to a shopping mall or a garbage dump does nothing for the bottom line of a team.

I'm not familiar with other stadiums but the article only makes sense if some of the other teams are building retail space within their venue. But even then, Footlocker and Radio Shack can lose you money if they can't stay in business either.

Dumb article, dumb opinion.

Without re-reading the article, I'm pretty sure that was one of the main points of the article, saying that some new stadiums are building in shopping centers and such into the facilities themselves. It said nothing about shopping centers or dumps close by. So, like you said, not necessarily that stupid, IMO.
