With the 14th pick of the 2018 NFL Draft, I would like it if GB picks the best available CB that they can get. I will need to trust that BG and his staff, along with the Coaches, have already researched the available CBs and they have pre-selected who they like.

With the Wilkerson signing, BG resolved the Packers #1 need for a certified pass rusher. As a result, GB's #1 Draft choice has changed focus from DE to CB. This new GM has already done well with dealing with the Packer's most pressing needs, DE and TE. In addition he traded a problem player (Randall) for better draft picks and a QB to challenge for the QB2 spot.

I am very impressed with BG so far and I eagerly await his next FA acquisition or Draft pick, which ever comes first. [thumbup]

I hope they pick for need. Not “best player available” stuff they always do.
If they want a championship , they need to fill the holes, or it will end up like it did for the last 7 years.

I'd agree that there are other needs as well, but with the addition of Wilkerson and Graham the focus has switched to the CB position/s. WR, OL, and another TE will I'm sure be addressed as well.

Drafting strictly for need is a surefire way to consistently have players that only last a few years in the NFL. The draft is a crapshoot. Draft the players you think will have the best NFL careers and fill holes via free agency. The most important thing for the Packers is to obtain more great players. There's not a single position on the team that couldn't stand to be improved. The Packers can get average players in free agency.

I am unclear as to how much a first round CB will solve any of our need issues this upcoming season. I hope we take the best player on the teams board. What would be wrong with taking a top talent offensive or defensive lineman like McGlinchey or Vea if you think they will be a better player than the CB or OLB on the board at the time?

That being said as a first year GM I think that BG will pick CB Jaire Alexander as he will likely be the top ranked CB on the board at the time. I think BG definitely does not want to make a pick that will be controversial in terms of requirement with his first pick in his first draft.

I like identifying 3-5 positions of need and pick the BPA available who fills one of them. For example this year I'd rank it something like:

1.) Cornerback
2.) OLB
3.) Outside Wide Receiver
4.) Safety (depending on Burnett)
5.) Right tackle
6.) Tight End

Then have it on a somewhat weighted scale, so if there is an amazing Right tackle or Tight end you take him but if all grades similar go with the position of more need (CB/OLB). If there is a quarterback, running back, or some other position you absolutely don't need then consider a trade back to ransom the pick to a team who does.

As for this year...

I think there are some real talented players like Derwin James, Roquan Smith, and Tremaine Edmund who don't necessarily fill a primary need but they may not be able to pass on if they're still around. However I'm guessing they are off the board and the Packers settle for a safer pick like Josh Jackson, Marcus Davenport, or Harold Landry. Safer meaning they fill a main need they have and are more likely to still be available.

If the Packers trade back (or trade up from the 2nd round) I really like Vander Esch from Boise St, he reminds me of a young Clay Mathews and the Packers certainly had no problem making a move for him.

Saying they have to draft the best CB available is rather short sighted. I don't know how the CBs are ranked this year but from what little I have read Ward may be the only one going in the top 15. If Alexander is a top 20 talent then drafting him at 14 is not that big of a deal. However if for some reason Ward and Alexander are gone and the next CB is rated somewhere in the mid to low 20's it would be a big reach to grab him at 14. Especially if there is still top 15 talent left on the board. CB may be our biggest need but it isn't our only need and reaching to plug a hole while ignoring a better player that would also fill a position of need, albeit a lesser one, would be foolish.

Id rather see them take the best available at a position that needs upgrading (CB, OLB, WR) but honestly if a top 10 talent falls I wouldn't really care what position he played (except QB) I say get him. Then, if your CB rated #25 is still available late in the first round use some of your draft picks to move up and get him.

Locking in on one position and saying they HAVE to draft one of those is just a setup for failure if you ask me.

packerfanoutwest (10-Feb) : wtf Barkley?
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : Getting Carter and Nolan Smith in the first round in 2023 was pretty darn good
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : for some reason i'm thinking of a draft where the Eagles where in the mid 20s and a top player fell all the way to them
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : I think so. I would need to look it up. Think it may have been Carolina's pick.
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : i'm not sure who i'm thinking of now
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : oh fuck me i messed that up
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Jordan Davis was 13th overall
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Carter was 9th overall
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Eagles had 15th and 10th selections, moved to 13 and 9 to get Davis and Carter back to back
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Eagles traded up for Carter, didn't they?
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : Obviously he was a huge risk but getting a top 5 talent on the dline in the mid 20s is fortuitous
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : Jalen Carter falling into their lap certainly helps
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : And we could only wish to have this type of D
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : It's not like Philly has had low draft picks, but has managed to get themselves a top notch pass rush. We spend so much draft capital of D
