Bittersweet day. Glad for change, but change isn't always for the better.

President/CEO Mark Murphy announces Packers will begin immediate search for next GM

“I want to thank Ted for his tireless efforts as the general manager of the Green Bay Packers for these past 13 seasons. Under his guidance, the Packers enjoyed a remarkable run of success, one that included our 13th world championship, four NFC Championship appearances and eight consecutive postseason berths,” said Murphy. “The organization, our fans and our community were fortunate to have had one of the NFL’s all-time great general managers leading our football operations. On a personal note, Ted’s work ethic, humility and loyalty are nearly unparalleled, and it has been one of the great honors of my life to work beside him. Fortunately, Ted will remain involved in our personnel department as we work to win another championship. We will begin an immediate search for the next general manager of the Green Bay Packers.”

“It’s been a great honor to serve as the Green Bay Packers’ general manager for the past 13 years. This is a special place and we’ve had some success along the way, but it’s the relationships that I value most. I’ve been fortunate to have worked with many dedicated people throughout the organization and I can’t thank Mark Murphy, Mike McCarthy, the football-operations staff and our scouts enough for their friendship and support,” said Thompson. “Additionally, I want to thank every player that has stepped on the field for us. This is the players’ game and I appreciate all the sacrifices they have made for the Packers. I look forward to supporting this team in my new role as we strive to win another championship.”

My god, there must be a book of prewritten scripts PR flacks consult when writing statements for occasions like these. They all sound sound exactly the same -- I mean, practically word for word. You could put literally anyone's name in them and you wouldn't miss a beat.

I still feel like we're in good hands, but I am personally hoping for the best for Ted. It feels like he has warning signs of Alzheimer's disease, so I really hope that it's not something like that. 😞

Yep, Aaron Nagler nailed* this one in his video chat last night: he predicted that the change would be announced with a quick statement released to the press and that there'd be no press conference. As he put it, it's doubtful Ted Thompson will ever give a press conference again.

_______
* Heh, I couldn't resist the opportunity to make a little crosslingual pun there -- Nagler is German for "nailer."

Maybe the new GM will let GB be on Hard Knocks or something.

Either way - I think change is needed, and likely for the better.

Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : It should be halted now.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : usually spambots are trying to get traffic to shady websites filled with spyware; the two links being spammed were to the Packers website
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : you know when you put it that way combined with the links it was spamming (to the official Packers website)
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Yep. You can do that with holding down ENTER on a command in Console of browser
