If a change at DC does take place, the best qualified to seek out and fill the position are the professionals that know their own. Candidates would I think come from both the Professional and College ranks.

Currently Wade Phillips stands out as the best, but his services would not, I believe, be available. Dom Capers himself might even recommend his own replacement.

Mike McCarthy isn't even the 8th highest currently active in the NFL... and that's not counting coaches that were reportedly making more than him and fired like Tom Coughlin, Jeff Fisher and Chip Kelly. Though McCarthy's contract is gonna be up soon, and he's probably could to get a huge new contract like all the head coaches are, in part because Jim Harbaugh set the pay scale higher for all the head coaches with a desperate Michigan.

He brought a fire to the sideline and defense that I believe was a big driving factor of the defense, not just Clay but everybody at the time.

Thanks for posting this Zero! I was wondering who would be potential candidates for a while.

Although I think it is unlikely for McCarthy to hire on the outside, both because of his level of loyalty to coaches within the organization and the "up and coming" position coaches we'd likely lose in a regime change (Darren Perry, Winston Moss and Joe Whitt specifically).

Maybe that's not true though! So from your list when I saw Vic Fangio I thought- yeah right like the Bears would lose the one stable piece they've had for the last few years. Then I google'd him and there are several reports of him being gone with Fox this offseason! That would be an incredible pickup for us, in my opinion. He brings a lot of experience, and more importantly a lot of success. His resume is impressive. Although I think his units have had more talent than ours currently offers, I believe his system is very solid. I also think he could be attracted to a DC with us because of McCarthy's approach to hand over the defense completely to his DC.

Would be a helpful pickup for us!

If Mike McCarthy was running a search for a new DC, one factor that I think would still be huge, is that last time, Mike McCarthy was demanding a DC that ran their own scheme and called their own plays.

Which I believe was because before Capers, the Packers had Bob Sanders attempting to run Jim Bates scheme... which based on Mike McCarthy reactions/comments of demanding something different, Mike McCarthy really didn't like that set-up of attempting to run a scheme of a guy that was no longer on the roster.

I've also got a feeling it won't be a loud mouth (ie the Ryan brothers)

Having served the last 6 seasons coaching the LB's and Safeties in NE under Bill Belicheck, I like Brian Flores for GB's next DC.

[cheers]

As far as who the new DC will be- I can't see the Packers firing Dom. With half the backfield on the IR, he has a gt out of jail free card. I find it even harder to believe anyone of real substance will want to take the job with Ted and Mike only having one year left on their contracts.

Dom and Mike have been paying their training staff extra to do a shitty job thus giving them their"get out of jail free" card year after year. No more excuses.
