Well in your case specifically, is it because you don't tell your doctor about your mental sickness, of enjoying seeing your team struggle?

Packers barely pulled one out against the Bears a few years ago, and you were PISSED, that the Packers pulled the win out. It's weird that some people enjoy/love pain, but what ever floats your boat, I guess.

if its team plane went down mid-season. Would they be contractually obligated to make such an attempt, or might they be excused from the rest of the season?

The sad part would be it would all be about money. If you don't field a team, you're giving up loads of ticket and concession sales, ad revenue. Yes, those are both going to take a major hit after the first couple games (which will likely see a spike in viewership), but that's still a massive amount of money to leave on the table if you decided to just not field a team for the rest of the season.
