Spot on. Too bad fans don't quantify the achievement of getting on any NFL roster and the rarity that it is.

Coach McCarthy has never been more spot on . He is most correct that , any that make it to a 90 man NFL Roster must be an elite athlete indeed. Making a 53 man NFL Roster is tougher still .

What we the fan discuss is also what the Coaches discuss , What player/s will make the new 2017 version of the Packers the best that it can be . Who is/is not blocking well ? Who is/is not tackling well ? Who is/is not catching footballs ? Who is/is not fumbling the football ?

No one likes to be criticized over their job performance , but like the difference between a very good waiter in a restaurant and a poor one , often the difference between football players is also obvious . I can understand how professional coaches feel that they are much better qualified to evaluate the players and I would 100% agree that they are the best judges of player talent. Yet as football fans , it is and has been our small square on the game board where we the fan has always been within their rights to question, criticize , advise, cheer, or raspberry their or any other team/s and their players/coaches/GM's/Owners .

Coach McCarthy is well within his rights to not like his players/or coaches being criticized by non-professionals. However, if the fans/reporters were not interested enough to be openly discussing all aspects of the NFL , then the NFL would be no more popular than Major League Soccer . [cool]

It kind of smacks of whining to me. Of course every single player in any major sport is an incredible athlete. No one gets there because he has pretty eyes. That said any fan who watches games for a few years can recognize the difference in the abilities of players. Fans want as many of the great players as they can get on their teams. It is not unreasonable for fans to be irritated when good players don't play to the best of their ability. Sometimes, Coach Mike, players have been known to dog it. Sometimes players will take a play or two off. Sometimes they don't hustle. Fans can see that. If the player is injured and YOU don't tell us then we have to assume it is not injury related. The lack of information that flows from most franchises to the media and fans is the #1 reason for criticism of players. If you don't like it then you have to change and be more open. It isn't going to happen so don't tell the fans and the media not to complain.

If you or the players don't like the heat, then turn in your multi million dollar contracts and go work in another field where you will be held to a lower standard.

Water is wet. Sky is blue...

Populist rubbish. Like wpr said...at any level this could be said.

Kinda like saying every fan who watches football knows something about the game. True. The difference in levels is dizzying the same as it is regarding the "all good" in MM's statement. If every NFL punter was good we'd not be constantly changing. There are HUGE differences in degrees.

We live in a society that is hell bent on trying to peg everyone as the same. In some things that is true, in others there's huge gulfs.

Our 90 man roster isn't 90 good football players. We have a handful that are good and less that are great.

Is every post here good? I'm sure a lot of mine in the past and probably this one will be judged well below standard...that should be the filter MMs comments are run through.

Ted Thompson sits on his hands per former GM: "because they’ve had 25 fricking years of great quarterbacks. Of course it works. Try it without a special quarterback."

This maybe should be it's own thread but I see Aaron Nagler commented below. I don't recall having a stronger adverse reaction to anyone at either paper, ever. To me, that guy is an absolute joke and I have no idea how he ever got the job he has? Isn't he a founder of a rival website that is pure garbage? Wow. There's hope for any fan posting away if a clown like Nagler can get the job he has. A pro like McGinn is gone and a hack like Nagler in. Dark times in Packers media.

I don't think I've ever heard anybody argue that players aren't good compared to the general public. Saying all NFL players are good is just a meaningless statement even though true it's not worth a discussion. Which players are better than other players and how much better is worth discussion

I don't think any person says "just a guy" about an NFL player in the context of they are just a guy relative to someone walking the street. I believe when people say he's "just a guy", it's relative to the NFL landscape and solely that.

I still believe the thing that separates the best players is situations they are put in by the coaching staff and the coaching staff. If you have a gun and don't know how to aim it, it's useless. The same goes for athletes. If you don't know how to use the talent and get the most out of it, it goes to waste.

As fans and many if not all of us having played football of some form at some point, we like to think we know more than we do and I'm almost as guilty as everybody else, Almost :)

We see a DB make an interception in preseason and go wow what a great play, what we don't know is was the player in that position because he did his job well, or was he there because he blew his assignment and got Lucky. We may see a player getting dragged 5 yards by a RB for a first down while making a tackle and say how bad the guy is, needs to learn to tackle better., yet the 4 guys who were supposed to be in position and make the tackle before the RB ever made it that far in the first place don't get mentioned. We see a WR open and say should have thrown the ball there, not knowing if it was even an option on the play called.

It is best to remember we don't know nearly as much as we think we do.

Mucky Tundra (30-Jan) : Now that's a thought, maybe they're looking at the college ranks? Maybe not head coaches but DC/assistant DCs with league experience?
beast (30-Jan) : College Coaches wouldn't want that publicly, as it would hurt recruiting and they might not get the job.
beast (30-Jan) : I thought they were supposed to publicly announce them, at least the NFL ones. Hafley was from college, so I believe different rules.
Mucky Tundra (30-Jan) : Who knows who they're interviewing? I mean, nobody knew about Hafley and then out of nowhere he was hired
beast (30-Jan) : I wonder what's taking so long with hiring a DL coach, 2 of the 3 known to interview have already been hired elsewhere.
Zero2Cool (27-Jan) : Packers coach Matt LaFleur hires Luke Getsy as senior assistant, extends Rich Bisaccia's deal

buckeyepackfan (26-Jan) : I forgot, they corrected the call a week later. Lol btw HAPPY BIRTHDAY dhazer!
buckeyepackfan (26-Jan) : That brings up the question, why wasn't Nixon down by contact? I think that was the point Kanata was making.

Mucky Tundra (24-Jan) : Rude!

Zero2Cool (24-Jan) : Raiders hired someone from the elderly home.
dfosterf (24-Jan) : I'm going with a combination of the two.
beast (24-Jan) : Either the Cowboys have no idea what they're doing, or they're targeting their former OC, currently the Eagles OC
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Fake news. Cowboys say no
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Mystery candidate in the Cowboys head coaching search believed to be Packers ST Coordinator Rich Bisaccia.
beast (23-Jan) : Also why do both NYC teams have absolutely horrible OL for over a decade?
beast (23-Jan) : I wonder why the Jets always hire defensive coaches to be head coach
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
