Malachi Dupre: From projected first-round pick to Packers' seventh rounder in a year

The skeptical response is, "That's why the so called experts are not a GM anywhere". They don't know what they are talking about. McShay only got 14 of 32 of the 1st round picks.

The optimist would say, "Wow first round potential int he 7th round. Way to go Ted. Look at McShay. He was right 14 times!"

I am some where in between. I think Dupre has value. He is raw and underdeveloped. Sitting on the PS for a yr maybe two will do him good.

Truth is, even NFL GM's are only right part of the time.
Look at a guy like Donald Driver. 7th round pick that ended up being HUGE for us. Or all the GM's that passed on Aaron Rodgers?

FWIW Gil Brandt had him listed at #64 on his hot 150 prospect list right behind Zay Jones and Cooper Kupp. Two names I saw on several fans list of guys they liked.

Malachi is a little taller, a little more lean. He is kind of a home-run hitter, post-corner type receiver, good player.

Adding onto what Thompson said, I think for a post-corner type WR, you'd like to see more break away speed or great double moves or in general route running and while he's not horrible at those, in the very limited film I've seen on him, it didn't look like he overly excelled at them either.

Also will all targets (WR/TE), you would like to see clean catches which the Packers high drafted WRs are known for in college, and I saw more double catches from Dupre's film... where yes he caught it, but it wasn't a clean catch as he first stopped it and then adjusted/juggled it and then brought it in.

But again, that's limited film watching. Though, there has to be a reason he dropped so far into the 7th, usually someone is willing to take a flyer on a big school kid with potential, and some teams don't seem to care about clean catches and route running as much as the Packers do.

Weaknesses: Lacks upfield juice into his routes. Vertical push doesn't appear to threaten cornerbacks. Needs to play faster off the snap. Slow to sink and open on curls. Needs a greater commitment to nuances of route-running in order to improve his separation. Tends to tip his hand early allowing cornerbacks to match his patterns. Stalk-blocker with marginal aggression and sustain after initial contact.

He didn't put up great numbers in college (even though that's down to the QB play quite a bit). Still, you'd like to see him making his QB better in a situation like that. I know it's hardly a fair comparison, but Reggie Ball was atrocious, but Calvin Johnson still put up some great numbers. Brandon Marshall recorded 1500 yards just a year ago while catching passes from a very average Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Not saying he should've matched that kind of production, at all, but a truly good receiver can make a QB look better. I haven't seen him do that.

Also, he has average measurables. I don't know a lot of 6'2" receivers who play at 195 lbs. His 9" hands are pretty small for his size.

Then, since he plays light, you hope that that at least adds to his speed and movability, but he didn't test very well in any of the drills that measure those two things. The numbers aren't exactly bad, but there's just nothing that stand out.

The two drills he did do well are the two that measure explosiveness and initial quickness. The two things he tends to struggle with when you watch the tape.

And I think that's the main problem. I mean, add what you said about the gametape and there's just not a single thing that stand out about Dupre. I hope he'll develop into a complete package, but I just wonder if he'll get the team he needs on our team stacked with "high upside" players at his position.
