Packers' Mark Murphy: No one can match Patriots but 'we're pretty close'

It’s easy for Mark Murphy to say it now after a run to the NFC Championship Game, but the way the Green Bay Packers president physically recoiled in his chair when asked whether he ever considered making a coaching or general manager change when they were 4-6 and on a four-game losing streak sure was convincing.

During an interview this week, Murphy was emphatic in his support for coach Mike McCarthy and general manager Ted Thompson, both of whom faced heavy criticism during the season.

"You don't make decisions like that in the middle of the season," Murphy said. "You see the season play out and obviously things changed quite a bit."

What’s more, Murphy made it perfectly clear that he likes the direction things are headed under the only coach and general manger he's worked with since being put in charge of the team in December 2007.

"The turnaround in the season, for me, gives me confidence in the organization and certainly the work of Ted and Mike that I think a lot of organizations at 4-6, I think it's hard to keep things together," Murphy said. "And to be able to turn the season around the way we did was something I think everybody was very proud of."

We are pretty close? Patriots won four Super Bowls, Packers 1 in the last 15 NFL seasons.

Giants 2
Steelers 2
Ravens 2

Just how are we actually close??

Oh, brother. We're close? LOL.

This guy is the great enabler. He may as well be a homer. His job is not to be and see clearly.

I want this M.M. out as much as the other one.

The 3 amigblows need to go.

This notion of being close is one of the most maddening phrases you're going to hear. The "we're close" applies to teams like Tampa...they've been building up.

The Green Bay Packers won a SB in 2010, and went 15-1 the following season only to bow out in Round 1. We've been in the playoffs every year since. We've been declining and flatlining ever since. Obviously, we were close in 2014. We're not as close after this season but we almost got there with the secondary we had and Ty Montgomery playing RB but it wasn't good enough. Just a strong focus on improving this team during the season may have been enough, but we didn't and cling to almost and next year because we're close.

"We're close" is a phrase for a team surprised by it's new found success. It doesn't apply to a team who has won a SB with the best QB in the game that keeps falling short year after year.

Murphy speaks like McCarthy. The phrase "we're close" is a hopeful pacifying phrase. It paints what's happening in a positive light. The phrase should be "we're not close enough". That is what a winner would think...not good enough. A loser thinks...close, and good enough.

I know I'm railed for my insistence on these kind of points but they're everything. We honestly think like a loser and are exactly that. Thinking like a winner would produce different results from the top on down.

EDIT: The we're close as applied to the Patriots? Un blanking real to even mention yourself in the same breath considering your team is known for either getting blown out or losing in bizarre fashion in the playoffs. The Pats are known as winners. Nothing else will do but a SB victory for them. We're close? LOL. We think nothing like they think. To sound contented being close to what New England has accomplished is just more loser mentality.

Here's Jersey AL from Packernet...Calls Murphy's comment, "disturbing":

My second thought this week is regarding Packers’ president Mark Murphy’s disturbing comment from last week. After the Packers’ loss to the Falcons Murphy said the Packers don’t have to win the Super Bowl to have a successful season. That explains a lot about the why the Packers’ have only won two Super Bowls in the last 21 years with two Hall of Fame quarterbacks. Something wrong, something not quite right.

After watching the Patriots win their fifth title, it is even more frustrating. This isn’t Detroit, this is Green Bay, still the holder of the most NFL Championships in league history with 13. There is a higher standard in Green Bay to live up to and while the Packers are good every year they don’t win championships, only two since Super Bowl II.

Maybe Ted Thompson or Dom Capers aren’t to blame. Maybe the blame starts at the top.

Typical fans don't view success in the same way Packers, Inc views success.

Winning the SB won't increase their bottom line. It may well decrease it.

Signing high priced FA's cost money. Even if it adds to the season ticket holder waiting list GB hasn't figured out a way to make any money off of it. Perhaps they should charge a $100 per year "holding fee".

Signing a FA more than likely won't sell any more jerseys. After all how many can a person buy in one year? If they don't buy Mr Stud FA's jersey fans will buy a different one.

Ramping up and doing what ever it takes to get over the hump won;t put any more butts in the stands. Won't sell any more beer or hotdogs. Even if half of America becomes Packer fans and sit at home in front of the tv watching the games GB still doesn't make more money.

Packers, Inc views it a successful season when they have squeezed every nickle they can from their fan base. Results on the field don't matter. This year was a very successful season. Teddy is the perfect GM.

The team was one or two players, from the SB. It doesn't get much closer than that.

This thread has been lightly commented on. I find that fascinating. Our top guy basically justifies falling short year after year and nobody has a problem with it?

Before this thread started I asked in another about where Murphy stood on all this? Pretty clear now this is a good ol' boy fat cat triumvirate with each one enabling the other.

MM gives a 3 minute and 17 second justification answer on why it's a successful season. Murphy gives his pathetic enabling answer and Ted says nothing other than they weren't underachieving at 4-6, that's just the way it goes and then praised the heck out of the win streak.

Sorry. This just bothers the blank out of me. We have 3 losers at the top of our food chain. This team and fan base deserves so much better. Makes me sick that so many are okay with this.
