Cornerback Bene Benwikere opened the season as a starter for the Panthers and it looks like he'll end it as a member of the Packers. The Packers announced that they signed Benwikere to their practice squad on Tuesday. Benwikere spent some time with the Dolphins after getting released by the Panthers, but did not see...

Seriously how can they put a 3 yr veteran who was a starter onto the PS?

From PFT:

For the cost (likely a league-minimum deal), Benwikere could provide the Packers some depth at corner should they lose Micah Hyde to free agency or decide to part ways with Sam Shields, who spent nearly the entire season on injured reserve.

Big props to Bene Benwikere! He played for my alma mater (San Jose State Spartans) so I support him, and am very happy that he's now a member of the Green Bay Packers. 😁

This is a real good signing. Low cost, low risk, probably no reward, but maybe a decent to high reward. As a rookie in 2014 he was a slot CB and played great. I think PFF had him as the top rated rookie CB and like 7 or 8 overall. Z2C, can you look that up?

In 2015, he did not play as well, though they had him outside more and then in December he broke his leg.

He came off PUP during training in 2016 got into at least one shoving match and wouldn't settle down because a TE was blocking him in a way he thought wasn't right in practice. He then hurt his foot. He started his 1st 4 games mostly at outside CB and was cut after week 4 after giving up most of 300 yards to Julio Jones in week 4. Rivera said his cut went beyond his performance, that everyone must be on same page. So it sounds like he was not taking well to the coaching. He also may have been playing injured.

Then Miami claimed him on waivers, put him on their practice squad a bit later [which means no team claimed him] and cut him Nov. 8, he was with Miami about 1 month. Miami had him for a month and said, no mas.

He's a min salary guy and no one claimed him and he'd be an ERFA in 2017, so you get him for like 600-650K for 2017. Then he's a RFA in 2018. None of the 32 teams believe even at this bargain rate he was worth a roster spot. So he's lost some speed and/or cutting ability and/or he's a cancer. So well see if Whitt can whip him up to speed and remove his head from his ass and that his full skills return 1 more year removed from injury. If not, all we lost is Baxter and in 3 weeks we can sign him to a futures contract too.

Thanks for the breakdown. I thought it was to years not accrued years.

He was torn to shreds by Jones on Sunday, though, yielding eight catches for 228 yards and two touchdowns on 10 targets. The other two passes were both knocked away by Benwikere, but the eight for 228 obviously stands out as a demerit.

Over the first three games, Pro Football Focus tracking credited quarterbacks with only six completions on 10 passes in Benwikere's direction, for 60 yards and an interception.
