I don't know if they are exactly conflicting reports Z. The JSO piece seems to be an article, which may have been put together a while ago. Even yesterday was ages ago as far as free agency is concerned. the NFP piece is breaking news, a scoop even.

So, with the Giants getting Rocky, Seahawks getting Cole... doesn't that leave the door WIDE open for us to get Canty?

Losing Cole most likely helps our cause for Canty even more, considering that was his next visit. Cole or Canty? You make the call... just upgrading the CC department.

PACKERS NOT YET PUSHING FOR CANTY
Posted by Mike Florio on March 1, 2009, 3:05 p.m.

With Cowboys free-agent defensive end Chris Canty engaging in an extended visit with the Giants, Greg Bedard of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the Packers have yet to make a play for Canty.

Agent Brad Blank told Bedard that the Packers had yet to make an offer for Canty, a 3-4 player who could move inside in a 4-3 scheme.

I dont feel at this moment and this could change any form of representation from the Packers that Im going to get a deal from them, Blank said. And you know the old saying: one in the hand is worth two in the bush.

And then the Packers called Blank. So maybe something will still happen.

The impetus could come from the fact that Packers defensive tackle Colin Cole has signed with the Seahawks.

Canty initially was scheduled to visit the Redskins, but the Skins pulled the plug once they signed defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth.

Before free agency launched, Canty mused about possibly signing with the Dolphins, given that V.P. of football operations Bill Parcells drafted Canty while coaching the Cowboys. But the Fins have yet to jump into the fray.

From what I gathered one said the Packers are offering more money and the other said the Packers haven't decided yet, but Thompson doesn't like the original asking price.

Perhaps Thompson made his decision faster than we thought.

Anyways regarding Cole and Canty. Two different players in the 3-4. Canty is a pure 3-4 DE and I actually think he has a lot of upside.

Colin Cole whom I felt is underrated quite a bit by Packer fans would of backed up Ryan Pickett at nose tackle which the Packers do need.

So I wouldn't really play one off of one another as GB could use help at both positions.

Perhaps the reality of Raji is pretty clear to Ted, thus the worry of Cole lessens?

Canty is that techincal non-sack kind of end we need and do not have. In my opinion you can find a Cole 2.0 pretty easily.

WTG Teddy, way to keep that checkbook closed. Hey i heard the Pats waterboy is a FA maybe Ted Thompson will sign him to make us happy so we can say we actually signed a FA lol. But honestly did anyone think Ted Thompson would sign any free agents this year?
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

Sounds like this defense will be hurting AGAIN! We need some 3-4 studs to keep this team to where it should be, CONTENDERS!!!

17.25 million guaranteed is a lot and a little overpriced for a guy based on potential, but as some point you've got to be bold and this was Thompson's chance to make a bold move. So what if it doesn't workout. As teams like Washington and New England have shown you don't' need 35 million in cap to make something happen. This was clearly a miss.

Bleh. I have alot of faith in TT, but this does get quite annoying. I know we shouldn't build a team through FA, but you also can't expect a team to just be build entirely through the draft.

I think we have a play-off ready team if we fill some holes, but we really do not sign anyone at all, it seems.

That said, maybe this wasn't all on Ted. I mean, maybe the player just wanted to go to Giants, who have a great team in place (aswell).

We'll see what he does further on, FA isn't finished just yet. Olshansky is still out there. He might not be great, but I do think he's someone we need along the defensive line for our 3-4.

While I'm not surprised, I don't see how this qualifies as "TT is a cheap bastard" scenario. Without knowing any more or any less about this situation than any of you, it seems to me that Canty just wanted to play in NY. We heard that at one point Ted Thompson had made an offer that was more than the Giants offer. Apparently the Giants matched or exceeded that. TT, quite reasonably, requested to meet with Canty and perform a physical before making a final offer. Canty and his agent did not want to do that. How can you blame Ted Thompson for not going over a $42 million contract for a player he has never evaluated in person.

It seems to me that Ted Thompson did all he could. That's just the way it plays out sometimes.

In other words Matt Ted Thompson was sitting on his hands again and hoping a player will come play for him. He's been in the league for how long and he don't know what kind of player he is gimmie a break. Lets sign the waterboy already lol. I thought this year was going to be different but once again we are the laughing stock of the league when it comes to free agency. I plain give up on free agency until Tightwad Ted is out of green bay which hopefully is soon.

Canty wasn't going to play here in GB. We asked him to come meet with us, he didn't come. He's from NY and it was the first team they met with. I'm sure they were using the Packers figures to drive up a price that they would accept.
