Four-and-out: Packers end losing skid thanks to Aaron Rodgers' hot start

Thank goodness GB faced a team racked with injuries.

How does a pair of touchdown passes to Davante Adams on the first two drives on Monday night against the Philadelphia Eagles sound to make everyone forget that futile start to last week’s loss at Washington?

Uh no. I didn't forget. I doubt that most of the rest of the fans forgot but thanks for asking. I did enjoy this game if that is what you are really asking Rob.

This looked like an entirely different team - much better showing tonight. It is no shock that that they play better when the offense comes out of the gate with a nice drive to start the game. It was pleasant to see some creative play calling, and Aaron was making some difficult throws like we have come to expect. Adams made some damn nice catches - he is starting to silence the haters.

Defense didn't look amazing, but they made enough plays to keep this game under control. There were a few lucky breaks such as dropped passes, but they took advantage of the mistakes and didn't give them a free pass to the end zone every other posession. As always there are things to clean up, but thank you for actually showing up.

This team showed up for FOUR quarters.

Maybe Mike hasn't lost them after all.

If we win the time of possession and turnover margin, I think we stand a chance in most games from here on out. That was a good defense we just played, so I'm hopeful we've turned this around on offense enough to keep the defense off the field as much as possible.

There was a nice catch by Cobb on a ball he had to stop and reach back a little bit but it wasn't off target by very much.

Injury to his leg changes things but the offense seems to run better when Aaron takes off and runs for 2-30 yards a game picking up 3-4 first downs. Maybe it's just me but in the past it seems as if Mike has told him not to run. Aaron has had 5-10 yards or more open in front of him and he pulls up and passes to a receiver. Really frustrating when it ends up being incomplete.

Firing the ball out in under 2-3 seconds was the key to the Packers moving the ball...Hope the trend continues. The Packers looked crisp on the offensive side of the ball...Aaron going to the first read often. Our defense still looks like Swiss cheese and thank god our offense could sustain long clock killing drives....Much to build on with this solid victory...was fun to watch.

If only we could rewind the tape and have Same Ole’ Jay engineer 4-5-6 offensive 3 and outs and see how the D would have done against the exact team in the exact conditions. Several 3 or 4 or 5 and outs absolutely kills a D suffering from injuries; especially multiple rolling secondary injuries like GB has had. The secondary of ILBs and DBs that practiced together in Mini-camp, training camp and pre season has been obliterated. But, more importantly, DBs keep coming and going, ILBs keep changing. Each week it’s like fielding a new set of defense players; and the staff only has 6 hours to coach-up this new group.

A good D game plan begins with 4-5 schemes; each scheme is composed of different variants and mixes of zone/man concepts posing as cov 1, cov 2, cov 3, robber, zone blitz, etc. As the opposing O adjusts to what the D is doing; Capers adjusts to scheme 2; then to scheme 3, maybe back to 1 for a few plays; then to scheme 4, etc. But, there’s not enough practice time to make communication perfect for even 1 or 2 schemes when the player parts keep changing. So when Same ole’ jay decides to be stupid or disinterested in playing his role, the opposing O gets 80 or more plays and can just t-off on imperfect defensive schemes 1 and 2 after figuring them out or Capers is forced to go to schemes 3 and 4 in which the player are unprepared through no fault of his own.

Also, notice how the ball being delivered accurately and EXACTLY on time makes the WRs look better; there’s fewer drops, alot more YAC, etc. And Schwartz, intimately familiar with McCarthy’s system from his days in Detroit, couldn’t stop this offense when Rodgers executes [like many GB forum postering experts laughingly claim that they can]. The O wasn't any more creative tonight, Rodgers just executed.

Again, the only difference between this week and last 4, on O and D is that Rodgers played to his salary by executing well and executing well in crunch time. Not complicated at all.

Can we run the table? If Same ole' Jay is our QB, not a chance; if Aaron Rodgers returns to QB, it’s likely. GB has only lost a few meaningful December games with a mentally and physically viable Rodgers since 2008 and Htn, Seattle, Minn, Chic ad Det all stink.

Complete team turnaround although there were a couple special teams almost miscues.

Offense ran effectively and efficiently. Rodgers seemed on. CREATIVITY IN PLAYCALLING, TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE FACT THAT WE HAVE A WR/RB HYBRID AND COBB. Running freaking slants.
Defense still got gashed but no home run balls. Got a pick which helped, and closed out the game the way we all want them to. Still struggled to get pressure early though but CAPERS ADJUSTED (although having their #1 WR go out helped with this)
Special teams didn't fuck anything up and Schum had a beauty of a punt down to the 1 (that almost got misplayed, twice). Cobb muffs a punt but gets back on it.

Almost got through this one without a major injury. Hopefully Rodgers is okay and isn't half-hobbled for the rest of the year. I know everyone wants to see him stop playing sandlot ball all the time but not being a threat to run really hurts the Packers.

Like the president, the quarterback gets way too much credit and blame. The WRs and RBs are the cabinet, defense is the legislature, special teams is the judiciary.
