According to NFL rules, teams are allowed to re-activite one player from the injured reserve list. With Sam Shield and Eddie Lacy both experiencing signifciant injuries, Packers GM Ted Thompson is in a jam.

Whoever he chooses, means the team will be without the other for the playoffs. Therefore, he must decide which player is more important to the team. This will not be an easy decision based on the current state of the Packers.

Although defense has carried the team so far, secondary play remains an area of concern. Up and down performances from young players puts the Packers at risk against playoff caliber teams.

Just look at the damage done by Dak Prescott even without Dez Bryant. While Quinten Rollins and Damarious Randall will likely return soon, the unit is still vulnerable.

This situation makes a strong case for choosing Sam Shields over Eddie Lacy. His speed and experience will be necessary for the Packers to make a deep playoff run.

By bringing back Shields, fans no longer have to worry about Demitri Goodson’s play to determine the outcome of a game. This should be a comforting thought.

Therefore, choosing Eddie Lacy over Sam Shields remains a viable option. By the time Lacy can return to action the temperatures in Green Bay will be frigid. It is doubtful the Packers would be able to throw 50+ times in January and pull out a win.

However, if Ty Montgomery remains the team’s featured running back, Aaron Rodgers will add a lot of mileage to his arm by seasons end.

Bringing back Eddie Lacy would alleviate this necessity to throw and give the Packers a bruising, cold weather back.

If Lacy reaches the secondary in 20 degree game, there isn’t a cornerback out there looking forward to the punishment that awaits.

In addition, the Packers could continue to rotate in Ty Montgomery to keep Lacy fresh. The team would then have its own version of thunder and lightning.

After weighing the benefits of bringing back both players, the Green Bay Packers should choose Sam Shields over Eddie Lacy.

While the offense would certainly benefit from having Lacy as their primary running back, it seems the unit can survive without him.

Forcing Aaron Rodgers to win Thursday’s night game was the perfect medecine for an ailing offense. Knowing his receivers don’t have what it takes to get open down the field, Rodgers relied on timing routes to move the chains.

Broadcaster Phil Simms reminded fans over and over that Rodgers completion percentage plummeted the more time he has to throw. This is because the receiving perssonel is not suited for deep routes.

Therefore it is on Rodgers to be precise with his timing and accuracy on nearly every throw.

The addition of Sam Shields would provide a jolt to the entire defense. No longer having to take on the team’s top receiver, Damarious Randall would play the role he was designed for.

Facing an opponents second receiver would allow him to take more chances and make a big play for his team.

With several weeks to go before a decision must be made, a lot can change with the current team. The offense may find its groove making Eddie Lacy’s return less important.

Or, Ladarius Gunter and Demitri Goodson could turn into lockdown cornerbacks making Sam Shields expendable.

Lacy if he doesn't put on 20 more pounds while he's on IR. If we bring him back he's IMO more likely to make it through a possible playoff run healthy than Shields is.

It's a tough choice. The real question is not Shields or Lacy. The real question is Starks/Davis/Monty/Jackson or Randall/Rollins/Gunter/Goodson.

I thn the second group is more suspect. You can hide a weak running game with a lot of specialty plays and short passes (If the receivers can get open.) The only way to hide a weak secondary is to put so much pressure on the QB he doesn't have time to set his feet. I don't think GB can do that enough.

They need Shields more than they need Lacy.

The article makes it sound like this is a hard decision... but it's quite simple.
Don't worry about the decisions you don't have to make...

In other words no one is going to be activated unless they're healthy... Shields nor Lacy are healthy right now, so it's an easy decision, don't activate either. If one becomes healthy, then activate the healthy one... if they both get healthy then pitch yourself to make sure you aren't dreaming.

Also if some how they both get fully healthy, then I'd say a lot depends on how their replacements are playing 8 weeks from now (which we don't know).

However, Ted went to trade for a back. So maybe that already gives us the answer. I think it depends a whole lot to see where both players are and how the secondary develops. I think there is a chance the Packers secondary does develop well. If it does in playoff time, we bring back Eddie. If not, we bring back Shields.

I still have bad memories of Shields being back from a concussion dropping routine INTs that would have put us in the NFC Championship Game last year.

I think you may get more value out of Lacy even if still not 100%.

beast (24-Jan) : Martha? 😋
Zero2Cool (24-Jan) : Raiders hired someone from the elderly home.
dfosterf (24-Jan) : I'm going with a combination of the two.
beast (24-Jan) : Either the Cowboys have no idea what they're doing, or they're targeting their former OC, currently the Eagles OC
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Fake news. Cowboys say no
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Mystery candidate in the Cowboys head coaching search believed to be Packers ST Coordinator Rich Bisaccia.
beast (23-Jan) : Also why do both NYC teams have absolutely horrible OL for over a decade?
beast (23-Jan) : I wonder why the Jets always hire defensive coaches to be head coach
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Aaron Glenn Planning To Take Jets HC Job
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Martha- C'est mon boulot! 😁
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Thank you
wpr (22-Jan) : Z, glad you are feeling better.
wpr (22-Jan) : My son and D-I-L work for UM. It's a way to pick on them.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Thank you. I rarely get sick, and even more rarely sick to the point I can't work.
wpr (22-Jan) : Beast- back to yesterday, I CAN say OSU your have been Michigan IF the odds of making the playoffs were more urgent.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : I've been near death ill last several days, finally feel less dead and site issues.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : It is a big deal. This host is having issues. It's frustrating.
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : just kidding...it was down
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : and there's the dagger
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooo 8 point game with 4 minutes to go!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooooooohhhhhh he missed!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
