The desire to excel on special teams apparently played an integral role in coach Mike McCarthy's decision to switch the Green Bay Packers from a 4-3 to 3-4 defense.

"Special teams were as much a part of this decision as defense was," McCarthy said at the National Football League scouting combine. "Instead of having nine defensive linemen and six linebackers, you're looking at six defensive linemen and nine linebackers. Hell, yeah, it does (help special teams)."

The Packers fell from a tie for seventh in 2007 to 26th in 2008 in a statistical breakdown of 22 special-teams categories compiled by the Dallas Morning News. The last time Green Bay finished among the top five in the NFL was 1993.

Obviously, most linebackers are much better contributors on special teams than defensive linemen. A linebacker in the 3-4, who generally is bigger than his counterpart in the 4-3, has the size and speed that McCarthy is seeking.

Articles like this make me think they will be looking for players in the draft who can also play special teams.

Connor Barwin, i bet went all the way up packer's scouting draft board. He been played special teams in college. He has the speed and motor to play 3-4 OLB. The fact he used to play TE means he has decent catching ability and that can help when playing in coverage on defence. i would not be surprised right now if he is no.1 OLB on their list.

It will be great news to see Hunter lose some weight and have the opportunity to play to the best of his ability at OLB as well as being a key special teams player. It just further solidified my view that moving to the 3-4 is still the right move.

I liked seeing McCarthy getting more athletic tight ends so that they could play special teams. Jermichael Finley is clearly an example of that. I hate immobile tight ends who is only good at blocking, i feel that the TE position is so much more than just that.

Oh, ye. I'm all for Barwin coming here in the 2nd round or so.

Also, this is something I didn't even think of. This will indeed be a big help, maybe even in coverage for Blackmon.

Hell, yeah, it does (help special teams)."

That doesn't sound very McCarthy-like btw. Maybe he's just very, very excited for the season to start aswell.

Linebackers always seem to be making plays in ST. So i agree having more of them can only help.

I like Hunter dropping weight for the OLB position. I think he was working to hard to get up to a good playing weight for DE, and now with the 3-4 he will be in a position that fits him more naturally.

The team has never come close to having a ST, like 96. Howard was able to get kick off returns because the blockers were opening up huge holes. If we can only get close to that again.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

I fear that we may not even get Barwin in the 2nd. I would not be surprised if New England use their 1st pick (#23) on him. I project that to be the earliest he will go on the draft board.

If we want to get ahead of them, there are some teams who we could trade with for our no.9 pick. Our no.9 pick is worth 1350.

Detroit- 20,33 (value= 1430)
Philadelphia- 21, 28 (1460)
NY Giants- 29,45,60 (1390)
Miami- 24,44,56 (1520)
Minnesota- 22,54 (1140)
NY Jets- 17,52 (1130)
Tampa- 19,50 (1275)
Chicago- 18,49 (1310)

Whilst Detroit are best positionally, i just cannot see them wanting to trade down. NY Giants is superb because that means we would have THREE 2nd rounders!!! the total value of their picks is worth almost the same as our no.9. Unfortunately the downside is that their pick is after the Patriots.
Tampa Bay picks looks good and they have the cap space to accommodate a no.9 pick i believe. Whilst we would lose out on value, it would still get us ahead of the patroits.
Philadelphia would get us ahead of the patriots and also get another 1st round pick. So two late 1st rounders and a 2nd early rounder sounds really good to me.

beast (22h) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (8-Aug) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔
dfosterf (8-Aug) : Apparently it is too complicated for several to follow your simple instructions, but I digress
dfosterf (8-Aug) : Zero- Did you see what I posted about Voice of Reason and his wife? She posted over at fleaflicker that they are both "In"
Zero2Cool (7-Aug) : Well, not crazy, it makes sense. Crazy I didn't notice/find it earlier
Zero2Cool (7-Aug) : it's crazy how one stored procedure to get data bogged everything down for speed here
dfosterf (7-Aug) : to herd cats or goldfish without a bowl. They reminded me of the annual assembly of our fantasy league

Zero2Cool (6-Aug) : I thought that was the Lions OL
Mucky Tundra (6-Aug) : Travis Glover placed on IR; seasons over for him

dfosterf (5-Aug) : I'm going to call that a good move.
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : Packers sign CB Corey Ballentine
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : I'm not sure how to kill the draft order just yet so it's not so confusing.
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : *to be able
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : and because it's not a dynasty league (which makes a lot more sense to be ability to trade picks)
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Oh I know; I was just exploring and it blew my mind that you could trade picks because of the whole reordering thing
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Zero, I think I preferred my offer: your 1st for my 15th rounder
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : Keep in mind, we do a draft reorder once all members locked in
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : You can have my 12th Rd for your 2nd round

Zero2Cool (3-Aug) : We did not leave.
Mucky Tundra (3-Aug) : Family Night! WE ARE SO BACK!
Mucky Tundra (2-Aug) : To this day, I'm still miffed about his 4 TD game against Dallas on Thanksgiving going to waste
Martha Careful (2-Aug) : Congratulations Sterling Sharpe. He was terrific and I loved watching him play.
beast (2-Aug) : I believe it's technically against the CBA rules, but Jerry just calls it a simple unofficial chat... and somehow gets away with it.
beast (2-Aug) : Jerry Jones is infamous for ̶n̶e̶g̶o̶t̶i̶a̶t̶i̶n̶g̶ chatting with players one on one... and going around the agent.
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : Oo just saw a blurb saying that Dallas negotiated directly with Parsons and not through his agent
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : I assumed that both guys will get paid, just a matter of when or how we get there
Zero2Cool (1-Aug) : McLaurin nor Micah going anywhere. They will get money
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : the Synder years or do they take care of one of their own?
