I wonder if we would have switched had we not landed Capers. I didn't really pay much attention to news after the regular season ended. Was there talk of moving to a 3-4 before the announcement of Capers?

Either way, I'm glad he's the one heading up this project.

There was talk but really it was more is Sanders going to get fired? Then after he did who's gonna replace him and some of the guys named were 3-4 guys.

There was a rumor is they might of offered the job to two other that turned it down.

But I don't know if they did to one. After hearing Williams talk it sounded like they did offer it to him and he turned it down. He said he ranked every team in defensive young talent and the Packers were #1 and it was hard for him to say no to the Packers.

Sounded like he was doing what his kids wanted and trying to help his kids. It sounded like he wasn't gonna take the Titans job because they didn't want to hire his kid out of college and the Packers were willing to hire him but his son in high school wanted to play football in the south so they went to New Orleans.

So basically he said no to the Packers because he's very good TE son wanted to play in the south more than the north.

ted thompson had this to say about Kampman.

On Aaron Kampmans move from defensive end to outside linebacker in the new 3-4 defense: I think its going to be a good move for him. Hes a little more talented player than a lot of people think. I had a long talk with him last week, hes really looking forward to it. At the same time you have to remember, in the NFL you play in your base package less than 50 percent of the time, so 55, 60 percent of the time youre going to be in sub packages where hes going to have his hand on the ground anyway. Im looking forward to seeing him do it, and hes going to be pretty good at it.

If i understood this right...we will be playing 4-3 about 50% of the time?

If that is the case, we need plenty of DT's who can play DE in the 3-4. That makes things a little more interesting about who we could target in the draft.

Well.. 4-3, 3-3-5, 4-2-5, 4-1-6, maybe even punt formations if he was including 4 downs instead of just 3. :P

And I agree, a 3-4 DE is a top need going into the draft.

McCarthy speaks at combine.

* If the Packers had to line up and play tomorrow -- and this is nowhere near etched in stone -- the three down lineman would be Cullen Jenkins, Ryan Pickett and Johnny Jolly. The four linebackers would be Aaron Kampman, A.J. Hawk (strong), Nick Barnett and Brady Poppinga.
* Brandon Chillar and Desmond Bishop can play both inside and outside. Jason Hunter and Jeremy Thompson will be in the mix at outside linebacker.
* McCarthy reiterated his preference to move away from the "musical chairs" on the offensive line.
* Josh Sitton, Breno Giacomini and Allen Barbre will have "an opportunity to play this year." McCarthy said Barbre will be looked at more at both tackle spots.
* Chad Clifton had both knees scoped and everyone involved feels good about his return to form.
* Mark Tauscher "is definitely part of the plan as you move forward but when I look at Mark right now he's really in a medical category as far as we move forward."
* Nick Barnett's return is targeted for training camp but there's a chance he could get on the field by the final mini-camp.
* Charles Woodson will stay at corner.
* Justin Harrell's rehab is "going better." He's able to go slower in the offseason. McCarthy hopes he's to the point that Harrell won't need surgery.
* "Our run game, as a whole, we could probably do a better job running on the second level."

I liked what MM said at the combine - just got done watching a game from this past season where they put barbre in for (who was it clifton) and he did pretty good vs abrams (falcons?)

I also like woodson back at CB; well to be honest he did good at safety also its just hes much better at coverage then our other guys (cept for harris).

I like barnett and hawk at ILBs and I hope we get a nice starter for the other OLB chillar and bishop seem ok but not the best. Be interesting to see hunter and thompson mix it up too.

Sounds like barnett's knee is doing good. And jenkins pec ... harrell ... <<< wonder whats up. Wondering if they used a chiropractor also or just went for the surgery.

No, they are taking Harrell's rehab slow and trying to avoid the surgery.
