I was wondering how you guys feel about this:

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP)David Ortiz says players who test positive for steroids should be suspended from baseball for the whole season.

The Red Sox designated hitter says the way to clean up the game is through testing and not by taking players to court. Houston Astros shortstop Miguel Tejada pleaded guilty last Wednesday to misleading Congress about performance-enhancing drug use in baseball.

Full Article

I myself completely agree. Why is congress wasting their time on this? They have much more important things to deal with. Players should constantly be tested, and if they test positive they should be suspended. Repeat offenders receive longer suspensions. I don't see why they can't do this.

My opinion.. since it is illegal without a prescription.. why are none of these users prosecuted for their actions in the court of law.

These are controlled substances that pose as much health risk as some of the other illegal drugs.. why not prosecute them in the court of law.

You have tests to prove they are dirty..

It's all about the union. Selig tried twice (1995, 2002) to push steroids testing, but the union threatened a strike, so I doubt the union would allow that kind of punishment. I think we're lucky that they do any testing at all.

I don't like the government being involved in any of this. All the players that are in trouble with the law right now aren't facing jail time because they did steroids, they're facing jail time because they lied. I don't think the anything the government is doing right now by going after Bonds, Clemens and Tejada is helping curb steroids use. It's not telling kids, "Don't do steroids". It's telling them, "Just don't get caught, and when you do get caught just come clean, then you'll go free".

All I have to say to the players is, you reap what you sew. Now players like Derek Jeter are coming out and saying that the media is exaggerating when they call this the "Steroid Era."

Well you know what Derek, if the majority of players were not cheating, then why did the union fight tooth and nail against a steroid policy? It would seem to me, that the players union is going to represent the feelings of the majority. And why did no players speak out and say they WANTED to be tested?

I love baseball, but it would not hurt my feelings in the least if they went down in flames. They've been ripping people off for years, and cheating the game. Karma's a bitch.

Cal Ripkin also said recently that he doesn't believe steroid use was a rampant as the media makes it out to be. Yes, it was obviously a big problem, but I still don't believe that 75% of the league, as some have said, were on steroids.

If the player's union is anything like the union my dad use to be a member of (he left when he found out how corrupt it had gotten), it wouldn't matter if 99 out of 100 people said they wanted testing. Their job is to protect their members and they'll do whatever they can to protect that one member. A union is a union is a union, whether it's plumbers or iron workers or baseball players. Some players DID say they wanted testing, but it didn't matter. Jeter has said he wants the other 103 names from the list released, and he's said in the past that he supports any testing MLB wants. Curt Schilling has been vocal for years about the need for more strict testing. Be mad at the players who used, but I'm not going to be one to place any of that blame on clean players. I'm pretty sure the players who were clean throughout this whole mess are alot more upset about this whole situation than any of us are.

Does this make any sense to you? My Mom used to work for a union and worked next to a guy that was always drunk. But the union would not allow them to a breath test. Isn't that just a bit of a safety hazard to have a drunk guy working around a bunch of dangerous machines? Thankfully the guy quit.

You say the union will do whatever they can to protect "that one member" What about my Mom, and they other people that had to work around that dumbass? Who's going to protect them?

Who's going to protect the clean players? This is why unions are a fucking joke. There was a time when unions were necessary, to protect the rights of employees. Now all the do is protect the fuck ups.

That's exactly what I'm saying, man. The way they're set up, the ones who get the protection are the ones who don't deserve it. I know how corrupt they can get. My dad left his union because of it. I'm not at all saying it's right, I'm just saying that's how it is.
