Although the NFL's investigation into allegations that four players used performance-enhancing drugs has cooled down, it may soon heat up again. The four players — Packers linebackers Clay Matthews and Julius Peppers, Steelers linebacker James Harrison and free agent defensive end Mike Neal — will be suspended if they don't give interviews to league investigators...

Goodell is a douche, but this could be trouble.

Maybe it's just a political thing, between the union and the league.

Yes, Goodell is a douche and its trouble.

The league made a big deal in clearing their golden boy [Manning] about how he fully cooperated. It was strange how they made such a public point about that.

This is the pretense the NFL has set-up so they could argue a reasonable basis to suspend the others and not tarnish their boy.

But the Union is a douche too. They say there is no credible evidence; but there's a video tape of someone "testifying" about the PEDs and other drugs he sold to Peppers and CM3. It doesn't matter that Sly recanted to protect his interest.

The NFL is entitled to investigate. And as Goodell and the Union pull out their schwantzes to see whose is bigger; its the Packers that will be hurt. Enough! Peppers and CM3 should say F&^% the union and honor their contract [the CBA that was bargained for on their behalf] ad cooperate.

They better submit to interviews then. They could face a suspension for not cooperating (will remain suspended until they do comply!) plus another suspension if the league "determines" them "guilty." It would be a tough loss to recover from.

So the league has a drug testing policy. However, if somebody makes allegations that somebody is doing drugs then the league is allowed to create rules as they go along. I have had my doubts about some of our guys, but as long as the passed the test they were clean according to league standards.

That's what I don't get. If they passed the tests, why should they have to answer to the allegations of some jerk?

Both Keller and Neal knew Sly at Purdue and failed their drug tests. The manning story checked out. Now is the stuff about Pepp and CM3 part of the same true story or puffery?. The NFL must investigate this or they'll appear to be doing a PED Sgt Schultz, "I see nut'ting."

And yes they have a drug testing policy; but they also have morals clauses and the right to investigate and quash any behavior that reflects badly on the NFL.

From ESPN:

In truth, this really isn't about PEDs. Again, the NFL has a policy for that. This is another maneuver in the now-ubiquitous power struggle between the league and its players. The NFL is emboldened by its legal victory over Brady and is using the same broad authority -- as written in Article 46 of the collective bargaining agreement -- to compel participation in an otherwise out-of-policy investigation.

If you celebrated Brady's discipline, surely you realized that your team could be next. You did realize that, right?

At the moment, it's difficult to imagine the limits of the league's power. Even in a union environment, with a legal CBA in place, we might finally have reached the moment when players are subject to discipline whenever they don't do what the NFL asks of them.

If this was really about PEDs I would be inclined to side with NFL, Inc. Get the cheaters off the field.
This whole process seems to be more about McCarthyism and posturing for the next CBA where the NFL wants to line up as many quid pro quos as they can for extending the season to 18 games and what ever else they have in their bag of tricks.

Once the NFL said that the source/report falsely accused Manning, I don't see how they can then say the source/report is credible to investigate the other four players without having additional evidence implicating those other players.
