If someone beats out Janis they'll have to either be a way better WR or be a little bit better and be able to have the same ST impact.

I don't know why people give Janis so much crap he's essentially exactly what you want out of a #5ish WR. He's good enough to make a few plays if he has to but he's a good KR and a fantastic gunner. Most WRs that low spend the game inactive or warming the bench. What good is it to use a roster spot on someone who may be a little better of a WR but they are gonna spend the whole game sitting down.

So the 7th round pick from Saginaw Valley freaking State hasn't developed into a starting #1 WR oh well. He has already surpassed any realistic expectations for someone with that background.

Unlike those guys though besides being a WR Janis brings something to the table on game day. Nobody ever rails this hard against guys like Brett Swain, Jarrett Boykin, Jeremy Ross, Myles White etc... when they make the team.

Whoever makes the roster as the #5 and #6 WR to me isn't even really a WR because chances are they are going to be playing very little from scrimmage. Their job is on ST so that's where they need to contribute. Show me one of those guys whose going to contribute more than Janis on gameday and I'll be more than happy to see him replaced.

Would it help you deal with it if Janis was just listed as a KR and we only kept 5 actual WR? It makes absolutely 0 difference to the actual construction of the roster but maybe it will make you guys feel better. Hell he can tackle list him as a safety just so people will shut up. Nobody cares if S rarely play on defense if they are good at ST.

Abby is on the bubble, but he's making a case to keep 6. They could also trade Davante for a conditional 4th, which would make room for Abby and an option to keep Geronimo.

What you see as giving him crap many of us see as realistic evaluation of his talents.

Then again he is a 7th round pick from a small school so I suppose its only fair he should get twice as long as anyone else to "get it"

Then add in that he had the 4th highest KR average in the league last year out of players that had at least double digit number of returns and the fact that he's a very good gunner on special teams, I would certainly say most of the players drafted around where he was don't contribute to their teams as much as Janis does to ours.

I'm not saying realistically evaluating his talents is giving him crap I'm saying people are going extra hard on him if you compare to other WRs that have been #4/5/6 guy. It's not like he's had a bunch of games where they've just fed him snaps and he sucked, both games he's gotten decent amount of snaps he led the team in receiving. All of these people are all over him basically just based on beat reporter tweets. If that's not your perception of it then fine.

I'm not saying give him extra time to "get it" either. What I said was unless another WR on the roster is a much better actual receiver than him they better be able to replicate his ST contribution in order to replace him or else they won't bring as much to the team. I don't care if this player is a better catcher or that player runs better routes. What I care about is will this player be able to make a bigger impact on a game to game basis and make the team better. I'm all for letting Janis walk if we have enough of those guys. A slightly better WR (or a slightly better player at any position) who isn't great on specials is going to be inactive or sitting down all game, that IMO isn't better for the team.

The only way I would punt Janis so far would be if the roster broke down to being between him and someone like Brice or Ringo on defense if they keep playing well at their position and make it into a tough decision (Brice to me has the profile of a great special teamer too). It's still early though maybe someone else can step up and make themselves uncuttable.

Abby might earn himself some snaps this year but barring injury I still don't think he'll play much. Jordy,Cobb,Adams and Monty are our receivers on gameday, anyone else are just emergency guys on offense and should be able to contribute on special teams or they really aren't worth much.

4-6 weeks according to reports.

This makes it a difficult decision, to be honest I'd just keep him in the 53 roster, there's always a guy that never plays so just cut that guy and keep Janis. Abby has a history of injuries, Nelson is coming back from a nasty one and Cobb always misses some time. WR is a critical position and it's important to keep a guy that knows the system.

Ok that last thing was a joke.

A number of people think Janis' injury solves the WR problem, because we can put Janis on the IR and keep Davis as the 6th WR. But I have a side question... even if Janis does go to the IR... as of right now, has Davis done enough in pads to have locked in a 53 man roster spot?

A lot of the great reports about how well Davis is doing, all seemed to end as soon as the pads went on.

If Janis goes to the IR, then I think Davis would make it based on potential and being a draft pick. But I don't think he has locked that up (yet) and if everyone is healthy, he might be a return man specialist or maybe even a healthy scratch if they're alright with Hyde or Abbrederis doing the returning...

From what I saw in Clev., Davis will clear waivers and make PS; no one is putting him on their 53. But if Ted Thompson sees him as a 3rd/early 4th rounder, then he'll consider him too valuable to clear waivers. I mentioned this the other day: there has been a huge influx of good WRs [and a bunch are UDFAs] over last 3-4 years.

If Janis gets cut there is a 100% chance he gets picked up. With his STs prowess, cheapness and a dummied down offense and/or a WR coach who thinks he can work w/ Janis' tools, some team will grab him.

And I dont get the 4-6 weeks. Terrell Owens in Dallas had screws and a plate put in his broken hand and he did not miss a game [he broke it the week before the bye]. Janis should be able to practice and play PS games with the club and stay in game shape. Who cares if he drops a pass because of the club.

Then Like luigis said the first few weeks we'll have 6-8 healthy scratches anyway, so Janis can be inactive until cast is off and therapy on hand is complete.

Also Mike McCarthy loves the 2 TE set. If Cook regains his solid blocking ability Mike McCarthy is going to go ape dung with the 2 TE sets and he'll need to keep 4 TEs, we wont be running as many 3 or 4 WR sets.

We only carry 6 DLman for seasonal depth-So with Pennell coming back game 5, I think we break camp with 5. So, for 4 weeks there's another spot for up to 11 TEs and WRs if necessary.

And a little factoid: the % of 7th rounders that make a roster are as follows:
Rookie year 58.3% of 7th rounders make a roster
2nd year 45.8%
3rd year 31.3%
4th year 21.7%
5th year16.7%
Janis is well ahead of the curve for a 7th.
