The Packers medical team has sure does take the safe approach to their players.

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- T.J. Lang has worked at 1265 Lombardi Avenue long enough to know how the Green Bay Packers operate when it comes to injuries and players coming back from offseason surgeries. When coach Mike McCarthy uses his pet phrase -- “playing the high side of caution” -- to describe the team’s approach, he means it.

Nonetheless, Lang said Thursday he was “definitely surprised” when he started training camp on the team’s physically unable to perform list, which in the Packers’ case might more accurately be renamed the better-safe-than-sorry list. Because Lang (and others on the list) don’t necessarily believe that they’re unable to perform right now.

Whether it’s general manager Ted Thompson or team physician Dr. Patrick McKenzie, who decided Lang shouldn’t be cleared for the first three practices of training camp, Lang believes his surgically-repaired right shoulder is ready for action. And he’s trying to be patient and understanding.

I can see them being extra cautious this year, not only with injuries but with playing veterans. We started camp early, we play preseason early and play an extra preseason game. I wouldn't be surprised to see all the veterans sit after the first series in the HOF game.
Why is Jerry Kramer not in the Hall of Fame?

Only wise to rest the veterans and let the young players get more experienced. I think they are using PUP this year more than most because of the longer camp and extra pre-season game. Keep TJ on the side until prior to the 3rd preseason game this year giving him three to get up to game speed.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

I would be cautious too. We have two of the best guards in the League. However, both are injury concerns. Sitton dropped some weight this year to help with his back. That is great, but what is the effect of losing weight on his strength?

Yeah I was VERY surprised, when they said Nelson was on the PUP list... because some were suggesting he was almost ready to come back at the end of last season and how fast his recovery was coming.

They might have just tagged every single "serious" surgery for the PUP list.

It sounded as if Sitton believes offensive linemen need the weight for assisting and preservation of their bodies from the impact of collisions in the trenches that offensive linemen consistently take.
