Thumbs Up: Many eyes at Ray Nitschke Field Tuesday were plastered on rookie wide receiver Trevor Davis, who after making a one-handed grab along the sideline seemed to gain confidence as the practice wore on.

Abby needs to make this team.

Sounds like him, Trevor Davis and Herb Walker stood out today.

Cool to hear, and it reinforces a lot of what we know about him. That said, its still day 1 and they weren't full pads.

I likes hearing that about Daniels staying on Kenny. By far my biggest concern is DL depth and we need Kenny and Lowrey to take pretty appreciable leaps this first year.

I love Abby, but he has such a poor injury history. If he can stay healthy, he could be a huge part of the O this year. Of course that's a HUGE "if".

In stepped Trevor Davis, the rookie who wowed just about everyone with his speed during the first two camp practices. It turns out, his hands are pretty steady, too. Davis spun around and caught the first one. He turned his back to the machine a second time and repeated the feat.

It’s only been two days of practice -- both without pads -- but the fifth-round pick from Cal is off to quite the start. On the first day, he made a one-handed sideline catch, and then twice outran defensive backs to haul in deep balls. On Wednesday, just minutes after coach Mike McCarthy said the next thing for Davis was to focus on the details of route running, he caught both a slant and a post during team periods.

Hope he keeps it up. Could be a pleasant surprise, much like Montgomery was last year.

Davis ran a 4.42 40-yard dash at the combine, and the Packers said they had him timed in the mid-4.3s.

he Packers will wear pads for the first time this offseason when the reconvene Thursday morning at Ray Nitschke Field. Traditionally, the first day in pads is especially important for offensive and defensive linemen. For Davis, wearing pads is another test.

With all his speed, Davis isn’t known to overpower defenders. A fifth-round pick this spring, he measured 6-foot-1 but only 188 pounds at the NFL combine in February. He is the lightest receiver listed on the Packers roster. Even lighter than Randall Cobb, who is three inches shorter.

To this point, Davis’ speed has shined in noncontact drills. A padded practice is more physical, rugged. Davis will have to fight for his release from the line of scrimmage. He’ll be bumped when he breaks a route. It’s a stark difference to running loose and free in a defense’s secondary.
