You can tell how serious the Packers are about replacing a specialist by who they bring in as competition. For example, signing weak-legged Giorgio Tavecchio was a clear sign GM Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy wanted Mason Crosby to remain their kicker, even though he was coming off a brutal season.

So what does last week’s signing of undrafted free agent punter Peter Mortell say about Tim Masthay’s future?

What was the weakness that Jon Ryan had that the Packers felt was too huge to overcome with coaching and development? If I remember well, I think it was all about his "Extra Step" he took before punting the ball.

Can he hold for extra points and fg's?

Masthay hasn't been a great punter the last couple of years, but he has been flawless when holding for Crosby.

I predict he will stay.
