Thompson won't move hastily in addressing areas of need.
Outside of the few veterans waiting out big contracts, a majority of the remaining players in the free-agent pool could be had cheaply once the unrestricted free-agent period ends. Last year, the NFL moved that date up to May 12 to allow players to sign with a team and participate in their offseason program.

After that date, any unrestricted free agent signed by a new team doesn’t count to the compensatory equation. While the Packers might end up with only one player – cornerback Casey Hayward – who could garner a draft pick, Thompson surely doesn’t want to compromise it.

But if you looking at the Packers spending over the last 3 years, they really have not been tight... as they have been spending a LOT, just not as much on outsiders FAs other than Peppers. But between resigning Rodgers, Matthews, Burnett, Nelson, Shields, Cobb, Bulaga, Daniels and many others, as well as signing Peppers and all the draft picks... I think the Packers have spent about $441,538,187 in the last three years, while I think the sum of the last three caps limits have been just $399,280,000 ... if correct, the Packers have over spent the cap by about $42 million in the last three years... keeping all your productive players isn't cheap and the Packers have done a pretty good job of keeping all their productive players.

The Packers like a number of teams are playing the odds that the cap will keep going up and resigning Rodgers, Matthews, Daniels, Cobb, Nelson, Shields and Peppers sure were not cheap...

But then again, we always have to throw in that "Packers people" crap to justify giving out the contracts we do. 🙄

You need several difference makers on NFL rosters to be successful. We have Rodgers, Matthews, Nelson, and possibly Sitton makes that upper tier player list. Who else you throwing in there?

I think you, yooper, and a number of our posters here are delusional about how free agency works. The vast majority of teams overpay for a guy that the original team let go for a reason, and then people are surprised when said player busts more often than not. These players you want for the most part don't exist.
