Death, taxes and Ted Thompson watching from the sidelines in free agency. Thompson is a tried-and-true roster builder -- drafting, developing and extending homegrown talent. Mike Daniels is a perfect example of Thompson's approach to free agency. While the Giants threw $50 million guaranteed at Olivier Vernon, Thompson locked up a better player with a $12 million signing bonus in mid-December. The loss of B.J. Raji to hiatus was mitigated by Thompson's foresight to extend Letroy Guion's contract in February. Grade: B

The difference in contracts between:
Mike Daniels (4 years, $42M ($24M guaranteed)

and

Malik Jackson (5 years $85.5M ($42M guaranteed))

are pretty staggering. Both guys are 26 and have four years of experience. Jackson is probably a better player but not THAT much better.

In fact, PFF has Daniels ranked as the #2 3-4 DE behind Watt and the #4 interior DT behind (Watt, Donald, and Atkins).

Like most, I would like to see a few free agents added. But you cannot say enough about how Ted has been able to lock up our own guys for value contracts. Food for thought...

And it's been 6 years since we polished an Lombardi trophy. I guess wasting the prime of a hall of fame quarterback doesn't factor into the equation.
