It sounds like Jordy is doing an AP type ACL recovery, so it may have been a mistake not to IR-DTR him.

If we cut him now [b4 trade deadline] he doesnt need to clear waivers and it will generate a 6-7M cap hit. But in 6 weeks after the injury will be healed [so maybe 8-10 weeks] we can resign him for the min and a bonus so he ends up financially where he would have been. Then his cap hit will be 6-7M lower over the next 3 years. So in 4 years the cap hit in total will be no more than if he stayed on IR and finished his contract.

I dont think there is a rule against this. But there will be next year after we do it 😂.

Reminds me of Boston signing Larry Bird the year before his eligibility expired; then they changed the rule.

If this was a ploy to have him play this season after we IRed him without the exception like Quarless, then maybe the risk might be worth taking, but just to rearrange a few million in cap money? No. It seems like this idea would apply more to somebody who is struggling to come back from injury and might be damaged goods. If Nelson does indeed come back strong, then we are throwing away the contract he has now and taking a chance it would take a lot more money to sign him later.

Once you're on injured reserve, your season is over. You can't play for the team that put you on injured reserve. That's how I understand the rules. Since you can't cut someone who is injured, you'd have to come to an injury settlement. Jordy would have to pass a physical to be cut and then would have to sign with a different team.

Tex- The ONLY reason to do this would be so Jordy can play in playoffs. The cap hit is a negative consequence of cutting him that will come out in the wash over time.

And Z2C, of course, that is the intent of the rule and if he stays w/ GB he can't play; but if we reach an injury settlement and cut him off injured reserve he instantly becomes a free agent. There is a rule preventing a waived-injured player from resigning w/ the team that waived him for 6 weeks after the term of the injury settlement. So if Jordy takes a 2 week injury settlement he can resign w/ Pack in 8 weeks.

The only hitch I can see from the example below is that Turbin is not a vested veteran and when cut must clear waivers. So maybe resigning w/ the team that did the injury settlement only applies to a player that is "waived-injured" not "cut-injured."

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/09/09/seahawks-waive-robert-turbin-off-injured-reserve/  article from September 9:
The Seahawks opened training camp with Robert Turbin and Christine Michael set to be the backups to running back Marshawn Lynch.

They’ll start the season without either man in the organization. Michael was traded to the Cowboys and Turbin has been waived off of injured reserve after reaching an injury settlement with the team. Turbin was placed on injured reserve with an ankle injury when the team made the cut to 53 players.

Turbin will be eligible to be claimed by the other 31 teams in the league and will become a free agent if no one decides to pull the trigger. He could return to the Seahawks in six weeks if he hasn’t found a new team, but that seems like a long shot given their decision to place him on injured reserve with an injury that isn’t expected to keep Turbin sidelined for the entire season.

I'm not understanding why you think a team can cut a player they put on injured reserve and then sign them. I'm not finding anything that remotely says this would be a possible scenario and in fact everything points to the rules forbidding it. You've clearly read more fine print of the rules than me I guess.

Turbin, not a vested vet, was waived from injured reserve by Seattle and he can resign with them in 6 weeks. This 6 week thing might not apply to vested vets; and the 6 week thing may only come into play if a guy is put on IR on or about final cut down day.

Nelson is about the same age as Vince Papale. My back-up plan is: Dr. Mckenzie performs facial reconstruction surgery on Jordy and he's given a new Guatemalan identity. Jerdy [pronounced "Hair' day"] Nelsanolosco, then walks into a sandlot game w/ US GIs at Guantanamo. The buzz hits the ears of several teams and scouts are dispatched and they give Hair'day a workout; of course, he chooses GB and is given a roster spot to Uffda's shock and horror 'cause he's too slow and not even a #1 WR on the Gautemalen national team. So when Jordy retires in a couple of weeks and you hear news of a Guatemalan WR phenom don't be discouraged; it's just Ted being Ted.

Horse Hockey!

Even if they could(AND THEY CAN'T), what kind of message would that send to the other players?

All reports have Jordy way ahead of schedule, even so he hasn't missed a practice, a team meeting or a game.

Jordy is to valuable as a mentor, leader and he has practically became another assistant coach.

He is well worth the money The Packers are paying him this year.

I think He is trying to get an answer if it is ok by the rules to do that, as Zero was saying it isn't ok. Even if we were able to do that you can't honestly think he would clear waivers. I could see teams from our own division claiming him just to prevent him from being on the Packers.

Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

beast (8-Aug) : But the Return from IR designations had to be applied by the 53 man cutdown.
beast (8-Aug) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (8-Aug) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔
dfosterf (8-Aug) : Apparently it is too complicated for several to follow your simple instructions, but I digress
