Yeah, blitzing against top level QBs is generally a bad idea. Repeated blitzing against a top level qb when it's not really working is... well I don't really know the word for it. That being said yeah Rivers went over 500 yards but it took him 65 pass attempts so whatever.

After all, they had 3 starters missing from their OL so clearly they had to compensate for that and they did with short quick strikes.

The scheme was more at fault, or lack of adjusting the scheme than the individual players from what I witnessed.

Edit, added quote from Datone Jones. It echos what I thought I witnessed so it must be a good quote. šŸ˜‚

"It wasn't anything where we were getting blocked," defensive end Datone Jones said. "It's just the ball was gone in 2 seconds. He knew he had a brand-new offensive line and he got rid of the ball really fast."

Phillip Rivers was playing like a man possessed. I can't imagine many defenses being able to stop him yesterday.

I sorta wonder if the coaching staffs attitude towards this game was: Do enough to win without going crazy with looks and personnel, recover from injuries during the bye and then go 0 to 60 the rest of the year starting with Denver.

Yes, IMO the Packers D could have done some things differently, but I believe that this game will prove to be a blessing in disguise.

1] Some of the Rookies got valuable real season game experience.
2] The Packers D may have just faced one of the leagues best passing attacks and survived. 3] Much may be learned from this victory that will benefit the Packers when they return from bye week to face the Broncos and the Panthers.
4] Best of all, the Packers showed that they have what it takes to be champions, and that is HEART! A quality that can give a team the edge when the going gets tough.

I think it had more to do with the lack of a pass rush and the repeated blitzing that wasn't helping.

The Chargers offense is known for trying to go deep and so the best way to limit that offense is to limit how often they can go deep. Chargers have won all the games where Rivers has averaged 9 yards per throw and lost all the games where he's been under 9. The key to this game was to try to limit the big plays down the field and limit Rivers yards per throw.

There are two ways to do that...

1) Conservatively by playing cover 2 or Tampa 2 and force everything underneath which would probably be the best way to go IF you have the players to play cover 2... but do the Packers have the players to play cover 2? ... Maybe if they're all healthy, but without Raji and Burnett (both would be needed to play cover 2) (also missing Richardson for depth) and lots of young guys at CB, and their WRs being bigger and more physical than our CBs. With all that going on coverage 2 probably isn't the best path.

2) Aggressively blitz the heck out of them which the Steelers and Packers and they both won. The down side here is you have to make sure you don't make a mistake as a DB and let them make a play deep and miss a tackle which lets them go to the end zone.

How about we make some in game adjustments????

This game reminded me of when Drew Brees was at Purdue and threw something like 85 or 90 times against the Badgers. They nearly pulled an upset too.

I was hoping we would change it up and drop into coverage a little more too. I think the reason why they stayed with the blitzing was expecting Rivers' near perfection to end and maybe he would throw one or two to our guys. He didn't; We were fortunate to win.
