Green Bay — Other than Richard Rodgers, it could be argued that Justin Perillo has been the next-best tight end in the first week of Green Bay Packers' training camp.

I wonder if that includes Quarless or not...

Perillo is far from a lock to make the team. The fact at least four tight ends have made the opening 53-man roster in each of the last five years does provide hope for such an anonymous player.

I keep believing this and I'll keep saying it... Quarless is going to get cut in the final cutdown. I refuse to believe they ever intended to keep him after the gun incident and will just wash him under the idea he just wasn't performing so there isn't some wrangling over why he was released.

Our TE group is an embarrassment with or without Quarless. Richard Rodgers is our great hope and that is terrifying to me but I know not to others. Mitchell Henry is my hope. We always seem to pin our hopes on some unknown TE way down on the depth chart and that is largely a function of having nobody at the position to begin with.

Perillo is another one of these types... it's sad and scary that a guy like Perillo or Henry may really need to be counted on this season.

Ted Thompson sits on his hands per former GM: "because they’ve had 25 fricking years of great quarterbacks. Of course it works. Try it without a special quarterback."

TE seems like an afterthought. I would hope that's not the case.

Richard Rodgers better be better than Jerron McMillian.

For an org that used to be gaga about the TE position they sure seemed to have moved on. Maybe, it's due to Lacy's arrival and emergence?

All top-tier QBs have had an above-average TE as a security blanket (added "had" as Brees lost his). It is odd that we do not. Perhaps that is MM again thinking he is the smartest man in the room and can get things done via WRs or Ted Thompson drafting to his board to the point of utter anality, but it seems odd that we will likely stock some other team's WR shelf with our picks and development meanwhile we sit average at best at the TE position.

The thing with TE is they get good matchups a lot in the slot as receivers but we already have an elite slot reciever which I think dampens the need for a big time receiving TE. It would be great to have one in the offense but he would still lose production to Cobb like Finley did.

Granted its only the first year after they left, we will see if Denver or NO make a TE a big priority after 2015. I'm guessing a lot will have to do with how well the replacements do.

I think it comes down to a couple of things.

1) There are not that many top tier TEs and the ones that are are going to cost you. If you don't want to pay for one you have to keep trying to find one on the cheap. With all the TEs the Packers have had on their roster over the years you can't say they haven't been looking. They just haven't been finding.

2) When you have a top tier TE you use the hell out of him and it shows up in the stats. If yours is not so good you play to his strengths (hopefully he has some) and the rest you play around him. Coaching philosophies change to some extent with your personnel. I'm guessing if RR or Q, or Perillo or any other TE breaks out he will be used more. If none of them do they will be continued to be used as they have in the past. Somewhat sparingly.
