I agree it was curious to not peg a ILB early in the draft, but I am not sure Ted "devalues" inside backers as he was paying premium money at the position the past couple of seasons. If anything, I think he might have not seen the talent level this year to warrant a pick over the secondary slots he choose. Part of that is the passing trend in the NFL and probably the long term aspect of the secondary.

Additionally, I think he figures that CM3 can help bridge the gap for another season.

As Ron Wolf might say, Ted Thompson has never had an inside linebacker as "the girl with the curl'.  Personally, I would have liked to see the Packers select Eric Kendricks with their first round pick a couple weeks ago. Outside of that, I wouldn’t have minded seeing them pick Denzel Perryman or Stephone Anthony. [...]

The ILB crop this year was kind of blah and the Packers took the better value at their positions. I'm sure they tried to trade back and when that failed they just went with what was most valued for them.

Additionally, I think he figures that CM3 can help bridge the gap for another season.

There is also that "steal of the draft" ILB Jake Ryan as well.

Ted Thompson was a linebacker in his playing days and I highly doubt he'd devalued that position, as you also indicated. The headline seems more like a "click me" bait than substance.

He's got the highest paid ILB in league history though lol

ILB is going to become one of the most difficult positions to fill with a single player the way the league is going. It is few and far between where you find a player that has the size to take on OL and FB in the run game, and have the speed and agility to cover todays TEs in the passing game. more and more we will be seeing bigger SS playing ILB on passing downs on traditional ILB will only be on the field when a RB is in the backfield..

I'm thinkin the nickel defense evolves into our base defense. 3 DL, 3 LB, 1SS, 2 CB and 2 DB's that can play anywhere off the LOS. I think the pattern was made for Woodson 5 years ago. Hyde did it somewhat successfully since then. The two DBs will cover the backs and TEs with the only true ILB being a run stuffing thumper. Expect Burnett to attack the run more.

Yep. I think you guys are on the right track. I have no doubt the coaches have a plan.

Ted himself was a moderately talented ILB, was he not?

It's much harder to find premium position players: QBs, Ts, CBs, pass rushers and DLmen outside of the early rounds. And no need to spend a 1st on WR; but 2 or 3rd is the wheelhouse for them.

So, EG, if Ted Thompson had a CB and a LB in same tier in the first; the CB will be taken every time. Only when guys like CM3 or Dix are rated in a higher tier than a premium position player will Ted Thompson draft them early.

Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : sounds like Packers don't get good compensation, Jaire staying
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Nobody coming up with a keep, but at x amount
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Trade, cut or keep
dfosterf (16-Apr) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (16-Apr) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (16-Apr) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
