If they stop getting hurt maybe. I have more hope for Jones tho. Perry is still up and down when he plays, he's solid at holding the edge against the run actually better most times than Clay or Peppers at it but still just flashes pass rush. Jones is actually a legit interior pass rusher which is a skill that any team in the league can use. He's still got things to clean up but if he stays healthy he will always have good contributions with that skill set.

One more year and we can say more definitively, but it looks like they're a little better than Hawk, but nothing great.

Nick Perry is a monster off the edge in pass rush. Unfortunately, he seems to be a one trick pony in that regard as he just mauls his guy. When that trick is predicted, he gets no where. Per ProFootballFocus.com Perry was rated 31st at OLB while Julius Peppers was 7th and Clay Matthews III was 18th.

Datone Jones is rated as the 22nd 3 - 4 DE and Mike Daniels is 8th. I like Datone and I think he's going to ascend.

Perry-Arguably our best run defender on our front 7. Doesn't look like he's durable enough to be a 3 down guy though.

Jones-Has some pass rush juice, just needs to be more consistent (and the health thing).

I believe I've read that Mike Neal and Datone Jones had a ton of QB hurries, having a number of almost got there sacks but struggled turning the QB hurries into sacks during the 2014 season. So I think they're playing better than their numbers alone suggest...

Perry, I don't know... I was surprise it seemed like Neal was getting more playing time than Perry... I don't think that's a good sign for Perry... thought the LB coach said Perry has been behind the whole offseason because he couldn't practice due to injuries. Maybe he will this offseason and explode in his contract year.

I've always been a big defender of Capers. While I used to, and I guess still do prefer a 4-3 to a 3-4, I haven't been that gung ho about it.

Think about it, however. Datone Jones was and would be again an ideal 4-3 DE. Arguably, you could say the same for Nick Perry; Mike Neal too. Even Peppers had his best career years as a 4-3 End. Our other D Linemen - most notably Daniels, but also Boyd, seem more suited to be 4-3 DTs. Yet we are playing a kind of D requiring two of the position we are the weakest at: ILB, instead of just one 4-3 MLB.

I'm NOT advocating getting rid of Capers, who I see as the Great Compensator - the factor keeping the Packers D borderline adequate with his schemes and tricks. I am, however, saying he/the Packers should use more 4-3. If you think about it, that kinda was the trend last year - going without oversize NTs, etc.

As for the original question, I see Datone and Perry slowly getting better, worth keeping, better than Hawk, but with a ceiling lower than you like for a #1 pick.

You get one more guy who can put a little more pressure on the QB, and these "hurries" start turning into sacks.

Pretty close to labeling both guys busts. If we just had better success drafting in the 1st round I couldn't begin to imagine what kind of team we'd have.

I've loved Perry and his strength but he seems to have no heart and is made of wet tissue paper.

Datone? I don't have any idea what to make of him. Seems like he has a chronically bad ankle and will never develop.

Ted Thompson sits on his hands per former GM: "because they’ve had 25 fricking years of great quarterbacks. Of course it works. Try it without a special quarterback."
