And Chillar was PROBABLY our best LB this year.....and Woodson, and Pickett.

Very selective in your analysis....but then again, if your mind is already made up about something, make the facts fit the storyline.

EVERY GM hits and misses in the draft and FA. And fortunately, Ted Thompson has not overpaid for some broken down former big name, ala Joe Johnson.

And your point is....you hate TT?

Back to the subject of Dom Capers, please....there is another place to bitch about TT.

ackers reach agreement with Capers
By Tom Silverstein of the Journal Sentinel
Jan. 18, 2009 10:20 p.m.

Pittsburgh -- Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy's new defensive coordinator will be Dom Capers.

A source familiar with the search process said Sunday night that McCarthy and Capers had reached an agreement on a new deal that would bring the longtime defensive coordinator and former head coach to Green Bay.

Capers made himself known with a 3-4 defense, but he has worked with other defenses as well and probably will employ a hybrid 3/4 - 4/3 defense. This past season, Capers was a special assistant with the New England Patriots, coaching mostly in the secondary.

Capers was the fourth of four prominent defensive coaches to interview with McCarthy. He visited Friday night and Saturday with McCarthy and then agreed to a new deal Sunday night.

Terms of the agreement are not known.

In Capers, McCarthy would be getting a coach who cut his teeth in the 3-4 system and used it consistently, sometimes with great success and other times with very little. During his three years as head coach of the Texans, his biggest failure was getting the defense established. Twice it ranked 31st in the league.

Capers, 58, has some experience running the 4-3, too, and undoubtedly picked up some wide-ranging concepts from Bill Belichick during his year with the Patriots. Part of the interview with McCarthy presumably will be to see how compatible their defensive philosophies are.

Capers got his start in the NFL in New Orleans under coach Jim Mora, moved on to become a very successful coordinator with the Pittsburgh Steelers, was head coach of the Carolina Panthers for three seasons, had two good years as defensive coordinator of the Jacksonville Jaguars under Tom Coughlin, was head coach of the Houston Texans for five years and spent two seasons as an assistant in Miami.

He had been rumored to be a candidate to replace New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who took the St. Louis Rams job this week.

Press Gazette said the contract hasn't been signed yet:

A league source on Sunday night said the Packers had agreed to terms with Capers to replace the fired Bob Sanders. The contract has not been signed, according to the source, but that it expected to be finalized on Monday.

Good solid hire for DC. Hope with this behind us we see a good solid defensive draft with holes filled. In free agency i would be happy with Peppers but i think Suggs is a more solid player. Please Ted make a run at Jimmy Leonhard this kid has flat out answered the bell for the Ravens. A Wisconsin player that would be a solid addition to the Packers.

Very good hire. He was probably top 3 candidate available, his under-rated.

well suggs is getting franchised and they are signing ray so the odd guy out is bart scott. I like the Capers hire that way we already have a hc if we have another bad year and mm is gone.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

So I seen this early this morning ... HOLY CRAP!

I'm stoked. I wanted McDermott, but wow, Dom Capers? This is freaking excellent news. I won't hold too much judgment on our next season's defense, but hopefully we get a mean streak defense very soon.

Zero....thans for your "mean streak" comment......it is something this team needes on every front. We are, in my opinion, bordering on finesse....which is intolerable in the game of football.

Good hire, I was really surprised when I saw this, too. I just knew for sure he would sign with the Giants.

I would be SO happy if we got Terrell Suggs now, he'd be a great addition to this defense. Hopefully we can run a 3-4, 4-3 hybrid if we get the correct personnel.

Here is one think you won't have to worry about in Capers.. long standing rumors are that during much of his time in Houston.. his work days were 16 to 19 hours a day... alot of the time sleeping in his office.

As far as flipping directly over to a 3-4.. I wouldn't get to worked up.. my guess is it will be a hybrid that is brought here.. something like you seen the Ravens run last night.. in some looks 3 down, some 4, Backers overloaded at time others spread.. varied.

That is the key to playing defense IMO.. changing the looks just enough to keep the QB and the rest of the offense guessing at times. Where is the pressure coming from and whom is dropping into coverage.. are the corners rolling man or zone? Etc.

The biggest challenge Capers will have is getting these guys organized and making sure they are assignment sure.

Remember Sanders extended Bates first year of defense principle.. keep it simple, don't over complicate the scheme and let the players make plays. Bates took over a defense from the nightmare that was left for him, guys blew assignments left and right in Slowik's blitz happy scheme.. for the first year, Bates made the right call. Tighten up the coverages and fronts and keep it simple and pure..

If Bates would have hung around, I am positive that the scheme would have become more complex. In comes Sanders and his one train thought.. keep it simple and let your talent make plays.. well up front we didn't have the horses to support that thinking.. but til the end.. he kept it very vanilla.. even his blitzes were simplistic in nature..

So Capers is taking over a defense that hasn't had multiple assignments tasked to the players, with different looks piled on top of it..

Be prepared for more creativity and aggression, but also some confusion and blown assignments early as the players adjust this foreign way of thinking to them.. it shall be interesting indeed to see how it shakes out.

dfosterf (16-Apr) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (16-Apr) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (16-Apr) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers are receiving interest in Jaire Alexander but a trade is not imminent
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Jalen Ramsey wants to be traded. He's never happy is he?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : two 1sts in 2022 and two 2nd's in 2023 and 2024
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers had fortunate last three drafts.

dfosterf (14-Apr) : Go fund me for this purpose just might work. A dozen nurses show up at 1265 to provide mental health assistance.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Maybe send a crew of Angels to the Packers draft room on draft day.
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I am the Angel that gets visited.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Visiting Angels has a pretty good reputation
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : what
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : WINNING IT, not someone else losing it. The best victory though was re-uniting with his wife
