The Green Bay Packers have released LB A.J. Hawk. The transaction was announced Wednesday by Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations Ted Thompson.

“A.J. is a consummate Packer and we are grateful for all that he has given and how he represented the organization over the past nine seasons,” Thompson said. “He was a durable and consistent contributor to our success, but more importantly, he is a great person and teammate. The Packers are grateful for all that he has done on the field and in the community. We wish A.J., his wife Laura, and the rest of their family all the best.”

“I spent nine great years in Green Bay. I had awesome teammates and coaches and a great medical staff and equipment staff. Many of them have become my closest friends. We won a ton of games, as well as a Super Bowl, and I loved everything about playing for one of the greatest franchises in all of sports,” Hawk said. “The fans in Green Bay are incredible. Between playing at Lambeau Field as well as seeing them on the road, they always supported us. I am looking forward to my next opportunity in the NFL, but I’ll always cherish my years as a Green Bay Packer.”

Hawk ranks No. 1 in franchise history with 1,118 tackles

It's for the best.

I have been saying the ILB was the Packers greatest need.

Who do you see as the top 4 ILB in the 2015 Draft ?

Hawk's tweet with a podcast update discussing his time in Green Bay. Hope my son can look up to players of his ilk, the right kind of professional athlete to emulate, except the going to college at Ohio State University part.

Tough position here.
He got a bad rap with most of Packer Nation because he never "lived up" to his draft position. However, he was a durable and sound player. He got the job done for the most part and made the tackle without being flashy. It does make me a little nervous that the Packers are now left with only two ILB (with one coming off injury) but there is no doubt in my mind that they end up going ILB with the 1st pick or are going to keep Clay inside and go OLB in the 1st. Take your pick.
This also frees up more cap space as has been discussed in previous threads. With both AJ and Brad gone, the Packers freed up another $7 million in cap space. This should allow the Packers to sign Bulaga, Cobb, Williams and House back.

While it had to be done, it will suck not seeing him play for the Packers anymore. And of course, a good/funny memory of AJ...

FAct is he was a solid throwback style player, who would have been more suited to the Lombardi era, during which time the running game was key. Never caused trouble, always showed up and did and said the right thing.

Dude would do anythng to win, except juice. Announcement from Minnesota in 3...2...

At least it shows they do want to win.

I was pretty disgusted when they held onto (and promoted) Zook.
