You only have one other ILB under contract right now. You have already paid Hawk $1.6M to play this year. He is due another $3.5M if he makes the team. In the grand scheme of things that's not a whole lot of money if he can contribute one more year.

If he gets beat out by 3 rookies (or if they re-sign Lattimore 2 rookies) then so be it, but you are only going to save a couple of million. The $1.6M is already gone and counted against the cap. AJ's experience and locker room presence is probably worth a couple million more. Assuming he can recover from surgery and play at an NFL level.

If he's going to get cut though it's better for him to be off the team when FA starts. If they hold off a lot of teams are going to use FA and the draft to fill roster spots and that would leave him with a lot less options. Especially with how he looked last season.
