Path for him to take over for Ted Thompson seems more clear every year.

The Green Bay Packers have promoted Eliot Wolf to director of player personnel. The announcement was made Friday by Packers Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations Ted Thompson.

As director of pro personnel I assume Ted leaned on him hard in regards to signing Peppers and Guion during the offseason but beyond that who knows?

There are a few GM positions available and while Wolf may not be a candidate for any of them he may be a candidate to replace some guy who might take one of the GM jobs. By promoting him now the Packers have more control over him. Teams can not refuse other teams interviews with their personnel if the new job is considered a promotion (Coordinator to head coach, director of personnel to GM etc) and they can not prevent a guy from taking one of these promotions. If its a lateral move they can. So, if the Bears were to hire some other teams (say the Ravens) director of pro personnel to be their GM the Ravens could request permission to talk to Wolf to replace him and the Packers would have to let them talk. They would also have to let Wolf go if he wanted to go. By promoting him they can now tell the Ravens no or they could let him interview but still prevent the move because it would be a lateral move. That's why you will see some teams adding assistant head coach to a coordinators duties. Its like a step up from a current coordinators duties so they can interview and hire another teams coordinator.

I'm not sure it sends any messages to other teams other than that the Packers really like the guy but I do think it sends a positive message to Wolf that the Packers like him and want to keep him around.

I mentioned the Ravens above because I was listening to the SCORE this morning and they had a beat writer from Baltimore on. Apparently the Bears requested an interview for their GM position with the Ravens guy who holds the same position as Elliot Wolf now does with the Packers and he turned them down. The Ravens didn't he did although the Ravens couldn't because of what I said above. Fact is he has turned down several similar requests in the past (Bears before they hired Emery, Jets, Dolphins and Seahawks were 4 the guy mentioned but he said there were others) It seems his contract says that when Ozzie Newsome retires as Ravens GM the job belongs to this guy so he is just biding his time. His wife is from Baltimore and he has been with them for like 17 years or something like that. I think that's admirable as he has no idea (unless Ozzie has confided in him) he will have to wait. Of course I guess he is being paid GM money so there is that.

He also mentioned that the Chicago GM job is not as attractive as some not because of the team but because of Ted Phillips. I guess the talk around the league is no one wants to put up with his meddling.

It's not automatic that Wolf would be like Ted. Dorsey and the others that were Ted's guys certainly weren't exactly like him when they got their own teams.

Ted has a great immunity from criticism in Green Bay because of Aaron Rodgers - who by skill or luck, take your pick, is his accomplishment. With the Packers great record over Ted's time, he gets praise, but if you look past Aaron Rodgers, he really hasn't done that good a job of building a team. Just compare position by position with most of the teams in the league, and the Packers come out worse - but Rodgers outweighs all of that. Assuming that Ted leaves about the same time Aaron leaves, I think I'd prefer a little bit more imaginative successor. Maybe Wolf would be that, maybe not.
