I remember reading in the book, "You're Ok, It's Just a Bruise", written by the former Raiders orthopedic doc, that many team doctors actually paid the teams for privilege of doing the job, just because of the money they'd earn off of recommendations.

Take that for what it's worth.

I know a personal trainer who says a lot of personal trainers work for the NFL for free for just that reason. Any PTs who hope to make big bucks working for professional leagues end up sorely disappointed.

Ah, yes. At the Fort Bragg Commissary, grocery baggers weren't paid by the store. Their sole source of income was tips from the patrons. That was one of the reasons I hated shopping there: They'd roll your groceries out to your car, then stand there expectantly, waiting for you to hand them some cash. The times I forgot to carry cash were therefore embarrassing and uncomfortable.
