The NFL is hoping to let its teams know tonight what games will be "flexed" to later times to accommodate the networks and their desire to have the best games reach the widest audience.

By rule, the NFL has until six days before the NFL regular-season finale to inform the two teams that their game is being moved to Sunday night. All but three of the games are scheduled for noon, including the Packers' game at home against Detroit.

The NFL has flexed the Lions-Packers Week 17 matchup to a 4:25 p.m. start.

I don't get the flexing thing. What's wrong with a noon game? Is it because more money can be made from the commercials?

Less viewers are available in noon slot as that's when most games are played and local markets have to show the local team.

The afternoon slot allows for the viewers enjoying their local noon games to see a national game after theirs.

But when they did sign the contracts one of the things that sweetened the deal and allowed for the networks to offer more gold to NFL Inc was the flex concept. Better late games than the normal ones which are primarily the West Coast teams and they have had a lot of mediocre teams in the past few years. Which translates into mediocre games.
