As my buddy Wayne would say, "That sounds like a GOOD problem to have."

I disagree. I think our depth at receiver is largely illusory. Let's look at the numbers.

Aaron Rodgers threw for 4,038 yards this season, of which 1,292 yards (32.0%) and 9 TDs (32.1%) went to Greg Jennings, while 1,012 yards (25.1%) and 5 TDs (17.9%) went to Donald Driver. In other words, 57.1% of Rodgers' passing yards and 50% of his TD passes went to just two receivers. Had either of these players gone down with injury, the Packers' offensive output would have plummeted (remember, James Jones was injured almost the entire year).

Bear in mind, Ruvell Martin only contributed 149 yards and 1 TD, with James Jones chipping in just 274 yards and 1 TD. We had the luxury of not needing these two players much this year (largely because Jordy Nelson stepped up), but a single injury to the Big Two would have changed everything.

Chances are Martin will be cut in the off-season, and we have no idea how stable Jones' knee will be next season. Drafting another dynamic receiver cannot possibly be considered a bad idea, especially if we shore up some of our line needs in free agency.

James Jones was hurt for most of the season and it's pretty obvious that Jennings and Driver should have the best numbers because they're the best players.

Jordy Nelson also had a very respectable rookie year and Ruvell Martin is probably going to be leaving to better things anyways.

So that means you trade down and take Percy Harvin to be your No. 5 receiver and probably kick and punt returner which I think he'll have most of his success at in the NFL.

I think you only do that if your a team coming off a great season and has very good talent at every position.

One thing I see is the Packers overrate their talent along the offensive and defensive lines. Also at safety and in some ways at running back too.

This is a team with enough needs in my opinion and they tend to fill their needs via the draft.

The No. 5 receiver is probably going to be Shaun Bodiford or Brett Swain.

Your analysis is unimpeachable, Porky88, but never forget the title of this thread was "I WANT Percy Harvin," not "We NEED Percy Harvin." 😃

You raise a good point, of course, but consider the fact that Jones was only credited with playing in 10 games  this season, and it's questionable how many of those games he could have actually made a significant impact had be been forced to contribute. Obviously, it's all speculation at this point. But I think it's safe to say only one or two injuries separate the Packers from having a great receiving corps and having a sub-par receiving corps. It couldn't hurt to have another quality talent competing for the position.

That I can agree with. I was actually surprised the Martin was back this year. I really don't expect him back for 09 either.

What is going to suck, if another WR is drafted and has success. The team is going to go through non stop WR needing contracts. Jennings after 09, Driver and Jones 2010, Nelson 2011, and then WR X would be up after 2012. 5 contracts for WR in 4 years. Yikes.

In that scenario, Driver might 'retire' or be released after 2010, if we get Percy.

The problem that I have is not so much about not needing more depth at the position. Getting another receiver that's good would be great. Another amazing WR would mean another big contract though, like you said.

If both Nelson and Percy would get some great production, combined with Finley up and coming at TE, Jennings just staying here and James Jones contributing about 500 yards a season, we'll get alot of unhappy players and it'll cost a whole lot to keep them around.

I think we have alot of young talented players at both positions he plays. He would be great for some depth, but looking at it like this, we could use some other players.

If he's still on the board when we pick in the 2nd round, I wouldn't feel that bad about picking him either though.

At the numbers you're throwing around, Rock, we'd be seeing Rodgers throwing for 4500 yards, minimum (all things being equal)!

My hunch is that Harvin will return to Florida for a crack at another national championship with Tim Tebow (and perhaps a Heisman Trophy), thereby improving his draft stock for next year. If he does enter the draft this year, however, it wouldn't surprise me to slip into the 2nd round. For one thing, he doesn't have a chance of being picked before Crabtree. For another, there are so many offensive and defensive linemen coming out this year. And for yet another, quite a few teams are in dire need of a quarterback, while the pickings for QBs in this draft will be slim at best.

Should Harvin elect to come out, I would be intrigued to see Thompson possibly trade out of the top 10 and pick up another first-day pick, grabbing Harvin in the 2nd round ala the Brohm trade of last year.

Usually the 1 and 2 WR get mos of the looks and receptions. I bet most tieams have the similar percentage. This is basically because the get the most opportunities.

Also they're GREAT :whipitgood:

Harvin as been eyeballed since he hit Gainsville.. but where do you play him.. to small framed to carry the rock out of the backfield.. his he physical enough to get off jams at wideout?

But I like him a ton... no chance we see him on the board come our second pick..

Want a player of the same breath... Pat White.. shifty player with speed.. think of the options that a player like that could afford MM?
