There are a number of other players on the interesting post.. but I found it interesting the Brandt threw the Rodgers signing into the bargain column.. he is projecting that against future contracts of Rivers and Manning.. pretty decent compliment.

http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/2009/01/2008-signings-best-worst/

Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers Speaking of Favre, the Packers had made a commitment to Rodgers soon after Brett retired and were intent on keeping it to a player they have been high on since he was drafted in 2005. I told people for three years that the Packers would be fine at quarterback after Favre left. Aaron received a strong contract from the Packers, with $65M over 6 1/2 years and $20M guaranteed, but that deal will not look as strong after the deals that Eli Manning and Philip Rivers are certain to get before next season.

BTW.. one player in the worst column.. I would love to here his impressions of the person, Javon Walker.

Javon Walker, Oakland Raiders I know Javon well and will keep most of my impressions to myself, but there were multiple reasons a team should not have overpaid here. Foremost among them was an injury history that started in the first game of the 2005 season when Javon went down with an extremely serious knee injury. That knee has not completely recovered. Javon looks the part but doesnt play it. He made $13M from the Raiders this year for 15 catches, about $867,000 per catch. The Raiders made some questionable signings this offseason Tommy Kelly and DeAngelo Hall among them but this topped the list.

I havent read thestory yet Z just what you took out and i don't understand how they can even compare Manning and Rivers to Rodgers both of those qbs have been proven in the NFL, Hell Eli has a superbowl ring and Rivers was one game away from the Superbowl last year while being on one leg. I just don't like all the praise they are giving for Rodgers after one season in which his team won 6 games. I know people will say if just me bashing but if you open your mind you would see the same thing.

It was a spectacularly smart move by TT. (Sorry, David :thumbleft: )

Aaron Rodgers salary cap for 2008:

12,899,979 base
1,050,000 pro-rata signing bonus
7,440 likely to be earned incentive

13,957,419 2008 Cap

Aaron Rodgers salary cap for 2009:

680,000 base
1,052,000 pro-rata signing bonus
7,927,440 likely to be earned incentive

9,659,440 2009 Cap

That is 4.3 million dollars less than 2008, and note how the money is and will be distributed for the remainder of the contract.

Well, it's true that Rodgers hasn't accomplished that much and it's risky to just sign a young QB to that sort of a deal after just 8 starts, but if he keeps playing like this, it was worth it. He might not have accomplished as much as those two guys have, but if Rodgers starts for another year and puts up comparalbe numbers to this years', he could've asked for a contract getting close to both of em.

He's a better QB than Manning in my eyes and on par with Rivers looking at this season alone.

The Javon signing I still don't get. I know you want to get your young hightly-drafted QB a weapon, but if that weapon is sitting on the sideline 9 out of 10 games, it doesn't help alot. Especially since he hasn't shown a whole lot since his break-out season, this is just a crazy move.

Both Al Davis and Javon seem to have declined at the same rate.

EDIT: Typo madness.

Im not saying it wasnt a bargain Dfoster just saying its not fair to compare his contract to qbs that are proven winners to a guy that got handed a crap full of money for what 8 full games. Of course Manning and Rivers will get huge contracts because they have proven them selves thats common sense.

Ok edited : I should say it will be a bargain if Rodgers plays at the same level for the rest of the contract if he keeps putting up good numbers but don't win the games i think it would be a waste.

I agree there is a certain amount of risk in paying a guy 20 Mill guaranteed after half a season at the point the contract was inked, but it isn't like Ted and MM haven't had the time to understand and believe in the player they have before them.

He has been here since 05, his work ethic, character and talent both in live action and practice I am sure was factored in.

Here is the thing that confuses me.. people are clamoring for free agent signings of huge proportions this offseason, two of the names have recently had shaky seasons only to bounce back in their contract year.. yes I am speaking of Haynesworth and Peppers. That is risky.

People say we aren't taking enough risk in the free agent market and adding talent.. by signing Rodgers before prime and through a good chunk of his prime years, we not only have taken on risk, but we have also insured that we may have more room to take additional risks going forward with a "bargain" contract at the most expensive position out there... QB.

Watch the money Cassell gets this offseason.. that is a player to be wary of.. but his contract will probably exceed Rodgers and his new team.. maybe the Vikes if rumors are correct that they will make a run at him, will probably regret long term.

I guess in closing, we have a known player so the risk is mitigated so to speak.

I'm going to half-agree with you, just on the basis of Manning and Rivers having much more on-field experience and production than Rodgers at this point. My guess is that Brandt's thinking in terms of potential, but I don't know - perhaps he's grouping them by age and the fact that they're all young established starting QBs?

Other than that, though, people will say it's just you bashing because that tends to be all you do when it comes to Rodgers - it's not like it's an undeserved thing or you've been mis-labeled. Your dislike for Rodgers is constantly on display.

The question that is being left out here is the most important one, imo. How much would he be costing once those other contracts are signed by other teams, factoring in that his youth gets him MORE money, all other things being equal. We went 6-10, this year. This would seem like the absolute best time to sign him, according to the logic of many. Think we would get him for cheaper than what we did?

I think not.

Good point - it was smart to lock him up before those two got signed, to avoid having his agent use their contracts as benchmarks. Very smart.

Hahahhahaha thank you ILIkE im glad i have my own label i worked hard to get it lol. But the only thing i don't understand about your post you said young established qbs, so one year as a starter makes you established? If thats the case we had tons of established players in the NFL, hell Samkon Gado was a established running back then when he finished the season with the Packers. I'm not bashing Rodgers at all i just was stating that The Author was very bad at comapring Rodgers contract a starter for one year to qbs that have been playing and one has a superbowl ring and the other was in the championship game also both are still alive in the playoffs again this year. And then they use the most overstated word in the dictionary "potential" every damn player has potential that dont make it. I understand we had the money now so it wasn't all that bad on taking the risk with Rodgers hopefully it works out and we have a decent qb for a few years.
