GREEN BAY, Wis. -- It was like the Green Bay Packers were back in San Francisco, circa January 2013, last Sunday in South Florida.

Only this time it was Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill -- not Colin Kaepernick of the 49ers -- who fooled the Packers with the read-option play.

It was really only one option play -- OK, maybe two or three -- that fooled the Packers this time. But when Tannehill ran for 40 yards on a second-and-5 play in the third quarter, it left outside linebacker Clay Matthews looking just as fooled as Erik Walden was by Kaepernick in that playoff loss.

Cam Newton is going to tear the Packers a new one with that read option business. Especially if Brad Jones is on the field.

I thought the Packers sent their coaching staff to some college in Texas to learn how to defend against the read option.
Apparently they didn't learn much.

Certainly the Packers need to brush up on stopping the read option; Hopefully B. Jones won't see the field and leave his jockstrap there like last week; However, I'd be surprised if Carolina let Cam run very much. He may or may not be recovered from his injury, but for sure, they are gonna not want him to risk re-injury.

I'm honestly as worried about Clay Mathews as anyone else. He's going to get burnt repeatedly. He plays with little discipline.

That's so true! And Newton is a BIG guy. Not easy for even a good tackler. And our D, other then Ha Ha have missed too many tackles this year.
If they can't keep containment on Cam, it could be a long day.
We need to get up at least 14 points early, and force Carolina to pass.

Battle of the MLBs to stop the run. On their side Luke Kuechly on ours Brad Jones. Like Tyson vs that guy that was in that commercial getting knocked out by a pizza. Cam is gonna kill us. We better take advantage of their weak secondary because I have no confidence we'll stop someone with the skillset of Cam after Ryan Tannehill made us look terrible with his legs.

I think it's even simpler than spying on the QB... you just take the backside edge guy (OLB in this case) and tell him to go attack the QB until they're sure the QB doesn't have the ball.... that's what happen last week when the Packers went for play action and it failed because the back-up DE attacked the QB (and didn't bite on the run action) and was in Rodgers face when he turned around and just lunched it not to take the hit.... I'm trying to remember, he got intentional grounding on that play right?

Now if the back side edge guy is targeting the QB like I suggested above then someone behind him has to come up for containment on the backside or possible runs or the RB will just go to the backside (or they'll call a counter) but this is how I think most (like the Ravens) handle stopping the read option. Front side attacks the RB, backside attacks the QB... and new containment guy for the backside to stop the RB from sneaking out the back.

The problem has been the Packers have either had their OLB playing to keep the containment, or the backside has been attacking the RB when they think it's a run, and we love it when Matthews catches the RB from the backside for a lost, but that over aggressiveness on the RB burned him when going against read option (and did last week on one play).

Martha Careful (3h) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (4h) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (4h) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (6h) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (6h) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (6h) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (8h) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (10h) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (17h) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (17h) : and there's the dagger

beast (18h) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (18h) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (20h) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (20h) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
Mucky Tundra (20h) : Oh snap!!!
Zero2Cool (20h) : Even Stevie Wonder can see that.
Zero2Cool (20h) : Nah, you see Lions OC leaving to be HC of Bears is directly related to Packers.
Mucky Tundra (20h) : ohhhhhhh Zero is in TROUBLE
packerfanoutwest (20h) : Zero, per your orders, check Bearshome, not packershome
Zero2Cool (23h) : Then he'll land with another team and flourish.

Mucky Tundra (19-Jan) : Oren Burks with a clutch pass break up...I will now light myself on fire
Mucky Tundra (19-Jan) : a run on 2nd down and 17 from McVay? So that's where MLF gets it from!
Mucky Tundra (19-Jan) : Do or die time for the Rams
TheKanataThrilla (19-Jan) : Kicking field goals are impressive
Mucky Tundra (19-Jan) : Oh that might be a backbreaker
Mucky Tundra (19-Jan) : That's what I thought too, just wasn't sure
TheKanataThrilla (19-Jan) : Kicking doesn't make much sense
Mucky Tundra (19-Jan) : If the Rams score a TD on the upcoming drive, they go for 2, right?
TheKanataThrilla (19-Jan) : Stafford is pretty good with 4th quarter comebacks. I would like to see it.
Mucky Tundra (19-Jan) : YUGE stand by the Rams D there
