Green Bay - The following a summary of coach Mike McCarthy's press conference Monday: - (On Matthews) It went well. - (On run defense) Conversation with defensive coaches there's some some things they hit us on schemtically and fundamentals. Second half we got better. Aware the numbers weren't good. Some things technique-wise that are new to us, we didn't do a good job of that. - (On practice week) Tuesday is a combination day. - (On 3 division games in 12 days) When it comes out you play them. It's unique. What's unique is playing three division games and having two new coaching staffs. That's where a lot of our coaches have been spending a lot of time. - (On new defense) Put players in best situation. Very critical of ourselves. Our players are talented. Give Chicago credit. But giving up that yardage there's no excuse. Things we can work on and definitely work on. - (On short week) I think both teams in same boat. I think there's a lot ore work earlier in the year with a new staff. Minnesota's played four games. They have a new quarterback. It's all part of a challenge. - (On scouting Vikings) Do a lot of preliminary game plans. - (On Vikings quarterback change) I would think he (Bridgewater) is going to play. I watched the TV copy. He played well. I was told the tests were negative. - (On offense) Getting a first down and then a big play. That gets you going. Just the way they played us. They stayed base against our sub personnel, that's why it played out like that. - (On first four weeks in NFL) Game is competitive and parity and think this team beat that team, you're guessing. There's a reason why you ask about medical list. Active list is a pretty important statistic. Anybody beating anybody is not a surprise to me. Biggest challenge is handling success. We had some success winning yesterday. But we haven't figured it out. This is 11 people playing on 11 people. So much has to go right. It's difficult to win in the NFL. -

I don't know what I want to hear at this point when it comes to the run defense, but "it's correctable, no excuses, we'll get better" just isn't cutting it for me anymore. We've been hearing this since A.P. torched us for 400 yards in 2 games. I'm not seeing the corrections happen.

I forgot where I read it yesterday, but the Packers have allowed over 2,100 yards on the ground in the last 14 games. 😢

We really ARE better off with this year's version of run D than last year. Part of the problem was that they played Guion, and he was horrible. Things were not nearly as bad with Boyd in there. I was disappointed with Pennell when he played briefly - not near as good as when he won a job in the preseason. Daniels also was not up to what I would have expected.

Some have said the Packers were "letting the Bears run it" to avoid their passing attack. Strictly speaking, I doubt that, but we did have a lot of LBs back in coverage rather than plugging those big gaps, and I can definitely see the logic of "if you have to give up something, let it be a 10 or 15 yard run instead of a long TD pass".

I don't see things getting much better against the Vikings simply because it worked in terms of winning the game big against the Bears. Asiata is roughly the same as Forte - a straight ahead non-breakaway back, and not quite as strong as Forte. The Vikings passing attack should be susceptible to giving up turnovers if anything, more so than Cutler was - whether it is the rookie or Ponder. So probably the thing to do is just keep on keeping on.

The time will come when we do face speed backs and smarter QBs. Then we'll see if Capers can adjust and our personnel is up to the job.

For the future, upgrading the ILBs in the next draft or free agency (yeah right) is what will help things, but for now, Capers just has to pick which poison to take in as small doses as possible.

McCarthy says "our players are talented".
If that's the case then there has to be coaching issues.

And I thought it was a poor run defense last year when they were 25th in the league and gave up "only" 125 yards per game.

Ok. So the Run D stinks. Who cares?

#1 Run D team- Jets. Currently 1-3 and on their way to getting the coach fired by game 11.
#2 Run D- 49ers. After a bad start, maybe rebounding? Or maybe their run is over.
#3 Run D- Bills. 2-2 which is good for them, but not a dominant team.

Packers Pass D is #5. So everything isn't bad. Of the 2, I would much rather be a top ranked Pass D.

It may well be only 4 games or 25% of the season but no one is looking at the 69.8 per game avg for SF or the 72.3 avg for Seattle and saying, "It's only 4 games. Let's wait and see what happens in the next few weeks."
