Mailbag: Questioning Clay Matthews' role

Each week, I will ask for questions via Twitter with the hashtag #PackersMail and then will deliver the answers over the weekend.

This week, one of the big topics around the Packers was the use of four-time Pro Bowl linebacker Clay Matthews, who has been playing off the line of scrimmage and dropping into coverage more this season. Questions about that subject lead off this week's edition of the mailbag:

Question: With the D/O-lines being the point at which all other actions hinge upon, why is management not ensuring that each has at least one fully competent player that is ready to play when a D/O-lineman goes down, as is to be expected?
Guion and Sherrod are not fully competent NFL starters in mine or anyones book.---Smokey---

Well that's the thing, Barclay was supposed to be the competent backup swing guy who could step in at LG, RG or RT (though people saying he was capable of playing all 5 positions is silly; I sure as hell wouldn't put him at LT and I don't think he got any time at C this summer).

It's kind of early to get a good feel for Matthews role atm. From what I see though our pass rush isn't really a problem right now so on that count I think were fine. Clay being in more of a roaming/covering 4-3 LB type role might be able to help cover a little for our weaknesses at the MLB position so we'll see. It's not like he can't rush the passer anymore from that spot.
