I'm really reluctant to post this because I don't like to delve into the race conversation. However, I do think there is something to there being a stigma against white skill position players. Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes made some $ off this idea. In the history of the 100m dash there have been 100s of athletes to break 10 seconds, one of them was white.

I highly doubt it drops a player rounds in the draft, but it's hard to deny that there is a stigma that exists.

I don't believe skin color has anything to do with where players at particular positions get drafted anymore. Obviously, it used to -- see Warren Moon -- but I think that day has passed. For which the NFL should be lauded.

However, I wonder sometimes whether it applies to Division I recruiting. If I were looking for racism vis-a-vis white receivers like Janis, I'd look to the universities of Division I. If there is one sector where "reverse racism" of this sort might come to pass, it would be in the universities. (If you look at the jurisprudence of affirmative action, an awfully large percentage of the cases involving assertions of reverse racism have come out of suits against state universities.)

Not saying there is such -- it hasn't been a particular interest of mine since my long-ago law school days when the Baake case was the height/depth of the debate -- but I think its more likely that any lingering racism, either the regular kind or the "reverse" kind, is going to be found in the teams of the NCAA than in the NFL.

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Why are their so many Black players in pro sports these days? I am sure there are men who would prefer it to be an all white boy game but they want to win and winning means getting the guys who can do it. Just because Janis is White doesn't mean he was destined to drop to the 7th round.

There certainly is a stigma in being a white WR or white RB. It's much stronger than the faded stigma of being a black QB. There need to be more white RB's and white WR's for that to change just like it took more black QB's to quell that former stigma.

The difference in the two is the white athlete has a much harder time playing RB and WR than the black athlete does playing QB. There aren't as many white guys with the athleticism of the black athlete so that stigma of being a white RB and WR isn't going to completely go away. How many articles do you read where a white guys speed is questioned? It was alluded to in the Janis article where Adams was quoted. The white guy is always answering questions about his speed and or athleticism. If you're unaware of Bill Romanowski and his story go read up on why he took phentermine. It is eye opening and a reality in the NFL.

Race discussion shouldn't be uncomfortable. When you approach it with objectivity and no bent it is perfectly acceptable talk.

It's one thing for the perception to be that white athletes possess less athleticism. It's another thing entirely to suggest there's actually a difference, and that race is binding.

Bill Romanowski wasn't taking banned or otherwise drugs because he was white and needed an edge. He did that because he's a total duffel bag.

For a white athlete to have a "harder time" playing RB than a black player playing QB implies that a black player has at least some added difficulty in playing QB when compared to a white player. And that's just a bunch of trash.

Race discussion shouldn't be uncomfortable, true. But when you use Bill Romanowski -- not exactly a beacon of integrity -- to prove your point, you're probably off to a bad start. And if you draw conclusions based on a player's propensity to be successful at a position because of his race (and not opportunity, stigma or stereotype), then I think you're doing the conversation a disservice.

Thing is, I can't tell which you're doing -- or if its both. I'd definitely buy the stigma/opportunity/stereotype argument. I think that's perfectly valid.

William Henderson didn't have to run people over. His preferred method was levitation.

Didn't have time to post it yesterday but there are two WR that are white and played at small schools that were taken higher in the draft.

Don Beebe played for Chadron State and was taken by Buffalo in the 3rd round of the 1989 draft.
Jeff Query played for Millikin and was taken in the 5th round by Green Bay also 1989.

Perhaps they were drafted higher than the 7th round not because of their skin color but because they both have the middle name of Lee. Maybe it was because they were both born in Illinois. That's it! White boys who are born in Illinois with the middle name of Lee will be drafted higher than other White WRs. It's a fact!

Sorry I don't know all things White when it comes to football. I really don't care. When it comes to color, I see players as Green, Purple, Blue and on occasion much to my chagrin, Teal along with some other assorted colors.

Here's the Romanowski story from Woody Paige at denverpost.com:

According to a report in the next edition of Sports Illustrated, an unidentified "white player told the grand jury that Romanowski suggested the substances (Phentermine, a diet pill with amphetamine effects) would allow him and Romanowski to compete on a level field with African-American players. SI claims the player said Romanowski told him: "We have to go up against the black guys . . . They're faster and stronger, and we have to take advantage of this. It is the only way we can compete with the black guys."

--- One can interpet black and white issues any way they wish to. I stand by what I've typed and find the idea that a white WR and RB are viewed the same as a black WR or RB to be inaccurate.

Uffda, please give up the Romanowski angle. The guy was one of the dirtiest players I've ever watched, and he was an absolute disgrace to the game. I don't care what he shot in his ass or pills he popped in order to play - he is still a disgrace to the game.

Martha Careful (15h) : Tyler Linderbaum C
Mucky Tundra (15h) : Cap space?
Zero2Cool (16h) : Do Ravens have anything we'd even entertain to have?
Mucky Tundra (18h) : I've seen trade ideas of Jaire going to the Ravens all offseason

beast (19h) : Commanders might have a dominant offense the next 3 years at least
Zero2Cool (21h) : San Francisco 49ers announced they have released DL Leonard Floyd.
Mucky Tundra (22h) : Er getting traded twice like that
Mucky Tundra (22h) : Huh, LT Laremy Tunsil traded from Houston to Washington. Never heard of a top OT getting traded in his career like that
Martha Careful (11-Mar) : Minnesota Vikings cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. is returning on a three-year, $66 million deal
Zero2Cool (11-Mar) : Damn
Martha Careful (11-Mar) : Saints are re-signing DE Chase Young to a three-year, $51 million deal worth up to $57 million.

Zero2Cool (11-Mar) : digits of four
Zero2Cool (11-Mar) : four digits
Zero2Cool (10-Mar) : Eh, don't think so. better to split
Zero2Cool (10-Mar) : on new site, would Fan Shout and GameDay Chat show same messages?
Mucky Tundra (10-Mar) : The Hall of Fame stuff probably came from a scout as Zero said; at this point though it's hard to see them moving ZT from RT
Mucky Tundra (10-Mar) : Regarding ZT at C, Gute had said he felt C was ZTs best position after he was drafted.
Zero2Cool (10-Mar) : LB Oren Burks to sign a 2-year, $5M deal with the Bengals.
Zero2Cool (10-Mar) : Based on how it was worded at the time, probably scout.
beast (10-Mar) : I don't think the media person ever told the public the source, but Gute or LaFleur did say they thought Tom has earned his spot at OT
beast (10-Mar) : I think it was supposedly unnamed Packers source
buckeyepackfan (10-Mar) : Was that Gute or Lefleur or someone else?
buckeyepackfan (10-Mar) : Zach Tom could be a really good guard, an all pro tackle, but probably be a HOF Center. Who said that?
Zero2Cool (10-Mar) : It's March 10th. I don't think anything is done.
Martha Careful (10-Mar) : if we think CB is done, we have a poor roster
Mucky Tundra (10-Mar) : CB and OG in FA, narrows down the top of the draft board a little
Martha Careful (10-Mar) : Meh....I hope we can get Ward 49ers or Murphy Vikings
