Well Matt im taking the floor being 123 million when they say minimum i would think. Like i said i have very little knowledge of how the cap works.

What the article was saying is that the salary cap will be raised to $123 million at a minimum. Basically, the cap will be at least $123 million, but possibly more. The floor will be 86.4% of what the cap is.

he NFL salary cap will rise at least 6 percent in 2009 to a minimum $123 million a club. The disclosure was made as part of a complaint the NFLPA made last month to Special Master Stephen Burbank.

Thats right from the story.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

meaning the salary cap will be raised in 2009 at least 6%. the cap this year was $116M. in 2009, when the cap is raised by at least 6%, the cap will be at least 123M. that means that the cap will be that high at least. not that 123M will be the salary floor. you're misunderstanding the story.

No, they're not. Dhazer, because of an ill-placed use of the word 'minimum' in the WSJ article, is under the impression that the salary floor will be $123 million. Bozz and I are explaining that the cap will be $123 million at the lowest, which is what the article meant when it used the term 'minimum'. The floor will still be 86.4% of whatever they decide the cap will be, which once again, will be no lower than $123 million.

I really don't know how to explain this any better.

I *think* dhazer is saying that he thinks the minimum payroll for any team has to be at least $123M, which would make 123 million dollars the salary "floor". that is not correct.

$123M will be the salary "cap", where cap is a synonym for "maximum", or "ceiling" or "upper limit". the salary floor is a synonym for the minimum salary a team can get away with. that number is 86.4% of the cap. so, in a year where the cap is $123M, the floor would be roughly $106.3M.

So, for next year, a team can have a maximum player payroll of $123M and a minimum player payroll of $106.3M.

Yes, the numbers you posted are true, but there's something else to consider. The cap is set relative to total league revenue. Of course, not all teams are created equal, so the NY Giants bring in more revenue that the Detroit Lions. Just because the cap is $123 million, doesn't mean that all teams can afford to spend up to that limit. Can the Packers? I'm not sure. You might want to see if you can find team revenue numbers for the past five years in order to determine what would be a reasonable spending limit for 2009. That may be difficult to impossible to find though.

Matt way i'm reading it that is what the team has to spend the league minimum. I culd be wrong but thats how i read it. Heres another interesting article i found and why Mike McCarthy won't be fired or other coaches. That money would count against the cap and Ted Thompson won't want that.

Coaches salaries don't come out of the salary cap. Or in anyway affect the salary cap.

But they still affect the team's bottom line because they come out of the team's "own money" (so to speak) -- that is, its gross revenues -- and thus are a significant consideration when management drafts the team's annual budget.
