GREEN BAY, Wis. -- After three days of training camp practices, the Green Bay Packers are taking Tuesday off.

It's a small sample size, but before they get back on the field Wednesday morning at 8:20 local time, here's a look at what we've learned about them so far, starting with the offensive side of the ball:

Boykin's for real: Despite using three of their nine draft picks on receivers to provide depth behind Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb, there's no reason to think any of them will supplant Jarrett Boykin as the No.

I am concerned that Tretter is not looking too good in the early going. No word in the article about whether Linsley looks good in drills at all, but I wouldn't expect a rookie to be ready to start at C in any case.

If Rodgers can't block, I would rather not see him on the field much. Again, no word on the rookie Lyerla,

I am glad to hear Lacy is working extra on pass catching. Some of his predecesors from Alabama have a reputation of being entitled superstars and have been less than impressive as pros, and I like that he's working hard on all aspects of his game.

Has anyone seen how Sherrod looks?

Lyerla has struggled with a couple of dropped passes and is IIRC practicing with the scout team.

Tretter got beat in one on ones by Raji. Raji actually seems to be invigorated with new life. The new "smaller, quicker" penetrating scheme plays to his strength, and he's also probably excited to be playing his position again. I'm not worried about Tretter. Not worried about Linsley either.

As for Lyerla, it seems to me the staff is trying to send him a message. It may need to click with him, but he's also probably rusty. He should be getting it going.

Plus I wouldn't get too bent out of shape over a guy "struggling" against any vet in the 1st padded practice, especially when that struggle consists of 2 snaps. If we get a couple weeks in and Tretter isn't looking too great or he's getting beat up in preseason games then I'll start to worry.

Lyerla seems like a long shot unless he impresses in pre-season games and plays better than he practices. Right now Quarless, Rodgers, Bostick, and Taylor are the front runners.

Rookie tight end Colt Lyerla on Friday had his best showing since he was signed following a tryout during rookie orientation camp in May. He caught two touchdown passes during team drills, although both of them were on the shaky side. On the first one, Matt Flynn's throw during a red zone period appeared to catch Lyerla by surprise when it hit him in the hands, but he hung on. The second, also in a red zone drill, he juggled while falling down but managed to secure the pass. Out of football since leaving the University of Oregon team last October, perhaps it was to be expected that Lyerla might start slow.

After a shaky first day during which he dropped a pair of passes, rookie tight end Colt Lyerla hadn’t done much of note during camp – good or bad. That changed Friday, when he caught a pair of touchdown passes during red-zone drills. While the undrafted free agent from Oregon, who was signed after participating in the team’s rookie camp on a tryout basis, still has a long way to go, it was a much-needed boost for a player whose confidence can fluctuate.

“He’s a kid that wears his emotions on his sleeve. He gets very excited about football, [but] whenever he gets frustrated, he gets a little bit down on himself. He’s his own worst critic,” tight ends coach Jerry Fontenot said. “So a lot of my role with him is to try to stay positive and help him through those growing pains.”

The challenge for Lyerla in his quest to make the roster is that he basically missed a year of football last year, quitting the Ducks early in the season before legal troubles followed. “The ball skills and the timing, the hand-eye coordination, all those things, who's throwing you the ball, the timing of the route and so forth, he's been away from it for a while," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "But he's done a great job physically getting himself ready for this. I think he's in excellent shape. He's a young guy that needs reps, like a lot of rookies. I'm sure the time off didn't help him.”
