I don't agree with the "slow replacement". When you have 29 players miss games and you can only have 53 on the roster, there is only so much you can do. There is always a limit to your depth. When they are all hurt, you are out of roster spots. It isn't like you can find pro bowl safties walking around on the street.

As much as Thompson has been able to find great players on the scrap heap, the are really few players available mid season that will come in and even be average. Much less replace a Collins.

Wood was actually replaced by Hayward who was an upgrade in 2012.

If you're talking about 2013, then you might have to remember rookies have to adjust to the NFL. In fact none of Thompson 1st pick started as rookies EXCEPT the LBers and Bulaga... and Bulaga was a backup until an injury got him into the starting lineup.

If you watch the rookies, you'll notice it normally takes them a bit of time to adjust to playing in the NFL... other than maybe LBers and RBs which seem to be able to adjust more easily (normally).

Also some teams seem to try to draft players that are more ready to go right off the bat... but those guys either go VERY high in the draft or have a lower potential to devolop. The Packers seem to draft guys with high potential high in the draft and so if the devolop them they become a lot better player even if they're not able to play right away. Worked out pretty well with a number of Packers players... devolop them with time, not throw them in right away... especially if they DON'T EARN playing time... they got to earn it, by devoloping.

It's a team sport. You get better the more you play together. Very difficult task for the Packers to get better as the year goes on with so many players in, out, back in, out again. That along with some not getting to see the field at all.
IMO there was no way for the defense to start out the season in 2013 and then come together, grow as group, and get better as the season went on. Not with all the guys that missed significant amount of time coupled with a few instances where players were last minute scratces and another player or two getting banged up any given game.
Too much shuffling. Too much compensating. I say compensating because when your putting backups in they are more limited in what they can do. That's why they are backups and not starters.
You want better results? Get the defense out there, together, building continuity. Building trust in one another. That builds confidence. That builds attitude.
By midway through the 1st quarter of the 49'rs game the D lost Shields and Neal and were already without Jolly, Mathews, Perry, B. Jones, etc. Mulamba is out there on one leg cause they had nobody left. They were OUT. How the F they stayed in that game is actually amazing.
Just stay REASONABLY healthy. All I ask. Everything else will take care of itself.

Don't tell me we didn't have guys available, because we did.
