Two seasons in, Mike Daniels has had enough.

Already one of the most vocal players, Daniels sent a public signal out to teammates after the Green Bay Packers’ minicamp practice Tuesday.

Yes, he’s comfortable in an expanded leadership role. Yes, he’ll be holding others accountable. He’s tired of the end result.

“If something has to be said, I’m going to say it,” Daniels said. “If somebody has a problem with it, we’re grown men. We play a violent game. We get paid to be violent. So why not? If you deck somebody in the locker room because you have a disagreement, there’s not going to be any sensitivity training.

“It’s a barbaric sport. So that’s how you’re going to have to approach it. I’m tired of getting our face punched in by other teams. I’m not used to that.”

Daniels was a definite bright spot on an up-and-down Packers defense last season. As he broke out with 23 tackles (17 solo) and 6.5 sacks, the run defense collapsed through November and December, creating turnovers was a journey and the season ended once again at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers.

A year ago, the sound of Daniels shouting at teammates during training camp practices became commonplace. After establishing himself, he’s even more willing to speak up.

Tenacity, above all, was the fuel behind his 31 pressures last season. Soon, offenses needed to double-team the 6-foot defensive tackle.

As a unit, Daniels says the Packers must get meaner.

“I think that’s been our biggest problem on defense," Daniels said. "So I’m personally going to really get the best out of everybody. I don’t care if I have to hit somebody before we get on the field.

So far, Daniels is encouraged. In the Packers’ youth, he sees signs of a defense that can get mean. He’ll be taking this progress personally.

“I think it’s something that we’ve lacked and need to get better at,” Daniels said. “But the good thing is you see it. We’ve got some young guys with some attitudes. And I think that’s different from what it has been. They’re ready to follow. They make our jobs as older guys easier. And the older guys know what it takes, what we have to do defensively. And like I said, I’m going to make sure I get the best out of my teammates.”

This team needs a guy like that, especially if Jolly's not coming back.

One one hand you gotta love Mike Daniels taking charge, on the other it's pathetic what he's actually saying. You have a member of this D admitting they've been a group of pansies on D. How is that going to change? The guys who have been on this D are what they are. You don't just all of a sudden because one guy is mad become a fiery group. He mentioned the young guys...that is the only way to change this D. The guys who have been there are who they are. I'm not sure a new guy, or two, is going to transform a soft group to a hardnosed group.

That article did more to depress me than fire me up. It is full blown confirmation that our D is weak, weak, weak. I feel sorry for Daniels that he is forced to play with a bunch of uninspired clowns. Dom Capers is hardly a rah rah type, either.

It is scary to believe this D is going to be any better. Will Julius Peppers who was never known as a fiery type really change our personality on D? He seems to fit right in with what we've had more than he's going to take it attitudinally to a nother level.

As fired up as I am about the O, is as concerned as I am about the D. I'm excited to see the pressure they can generate on 3rd downs but other than that I have a hard time believing it won't be more of the same from that group.

Ted Thompson sits on his hands per former GM: "because they’ve had 25 fricking years of great quarterbacks. Of course it works. Try it without a special quarterback."

You don't need a bunch of fiery players to have a good defense you need good football players. We didn't have a bunch of fiery rah rah guys in 2010 our problem has been due to injurys and some guys plain not stepping up the talent has been lower and Capers stubbornness to replace underperforming vets with younger guys hasn't helped either.

I'm more excited about what McCarthy's talk about more personnel groupings than any talk about players having more attitude. That should help sort out guys who are going to step up and play from guys who are just happy to have a job and coasting.

I'm looking forward to the defense this year because I do think we are going to see a huge difference in play. Glad Daniels is stepping up as a leader on the defense...someone had to.

As others have said after your post, I don't necessarily feel you need a bunch of rah rah meatheads at every position, but it's sure nice to have in much of your front 7, which this team pretty clearly did not have before. Aside from maybe Carl Bradford, I don't know that the team added any like this either.

Well we all still have concerns about the defense, but what I can get from this interview is a very direct appreciation for Mike Daniels and his ability to be a playmaker. Other guys... feel free to step up at any time...

The first step in change/progress is admitting that you have a problem.

There have been too many injury excuses on defense.

Many of these muscle pulls are a lack of preparation and stretching. I'm looking directly at Matthews annual hamstring pull.

Softness comes from a lack of professionalism.

Jones, Perry, and Worthy better get their heads into being professional.

Daniels only plays because more talented players lack the commitment care they should have.

You don't stay in Green Bay long if you don't get on the field.
