With some estimates of Jeff Janis going in the fifth, even fourth, round, he fell all the way to the Packers with 236th pick overall in the seventh round.

"Positive: Four-year starter who totaled 83 receptions, 1572 yards, and 14 TDs as a senior. Junior numbers included 106 receptions, 1635 yards, and 18 TDs. Physically impressive receiver with inconsistent hands. Fluid releasing off the line, immediately gets to top speed, and runs good routes. Quick into breaks, stays low on exit, and has a burst coming back to the ball or getting into the seam. Competes to make receptions, immediately transitions to running after the catch, and works hard to pick up positive yardage. Displays good hand/eye coordination, as well as timing.

Negative: Lets the ball get inside him and all too often drops catchable throws. Despite having a physical advantage over defenders, struggles handling jams and does not play like a big receiver. Should be a better downfield blocker.

Analysis: From a size/speed point of view, Janis grades as a second-day pick and occasionally plays like one. He needs consistency in his all-around game and must learn to do the little things well while fully translating his athletic skills onto the football field for a career at the next level."

I saw him projected as a sixth or seventh round pick, but the article is definitely right about his skill-set being impressive. I would be surprised to see him contribute this year. In fact I think he's probably headed for the Practice Squad. Still, best of luck to him (and the rest of the rookies, for that matter). I really liked our draft this year.

I'm trying to figure out who he really has to outdo to make the roster? Likely, Abbrederis if we're keeping 5. If we keep 6 his competition isn't real strong. I think we could much more easily sneak Dorsey on the PS than Janis.

Dorsey, White, Gillette, Harper??? I think he can beat out those 4 just because he was a 2014 draft choice. I realize Dorsey was a 2013 choice but Janis is latest and greatest kind of a thing.

You can pencil in Adams and Abbrederis. Abby ain't getting cut.

We always carry too many TE's. Just carry the normal 3 and carry a 6th WR.

Quarless, Bostick and Rodgers will likely be the three. Taylor is a nice ST guy. Stoneburner better have become the other Sharpe (Ha!) or he'll be gone daddy gone. Man, we have a scary group of TE's and not in a good way. What if Finley comes back and they resign him?

I LOVE pre-season football and am glad there are 4 games to look at the new guys. Should be a ball watching the new guys like it is each and every year. Will there be a darker horse than Janis who takes the Packers by storm? Man, I love that stuff.

EDIT: Here's an interesting blurb about a metric the Packers use to determine overall athleticism of WR's and where Janis ranked. Going to be hard for Ted Thompson to just cut this guy, if/when it comes down to it.

from packersnews.com

Janis, selected at No. 236, is a pure size-speed prospect at 6-27⁄8, 219 pounds and with a 4.41-second 40 and a 37½-inch vertical jump. He put up big numbers at the Division II level (246 catches, 17.5-yard average and 46 touchdowns in his career), and Thompson said that in the Packers’ system for converting all physical tests into an overall grade of athleticism, Janis ranked second among all receivers in this year’s draft.

“He’s a remarkably gifted athlete,” Thompson said. “He completely dominated his level of play.”

I'm thinking both abbi and janis make the roster if for no other reason, st versatility, something the packers love...it's the same reason I think the osu center makes it...so we stop wasting a roster spot on a long snapper.

Obviously we know about abbi's ST Potential, and you'd think the supposed 2nd most athletic wr in the draft could be a gunner or have some purposeful role

Injuries usually seems to make our decisions for us. Here is to hoping for some good old healthy competition for once!

Janis could prove a big beneficiary of that Linsley pick.
