To my mind, if you have an all-world QB, you should be pulling out the stops to win, period. Thinking that you'll have time because Peyton doesn't have as much in the tank as Rodgers is forgetting that BOTH of them are one injury away from becoming less-than-all-world. It only takes one severe shoulder injury or one concussion and Rodgers' time horizon is shortened by several years.

I've never liked Elway. But whatever else you might say about the guy, he has demonstrated his willingness to take major risks. And he got his team closer to the championship contention more quickly with less than Thompson has, and he looks to be doing more to try to keep his team there than Thompson has. IMO.

Overspending is relative. IMO committing a hundred million to a quarterback is overspending if you don't match it with a willingness to do what it takes to leverage that investment into becoming a serious championship contender (as opposed to a regular playoff wildcard/NFC North title winner).

Leveraging is about taking risks. Overspending somewhat isn't a vice if it yields championships. Insisting on never overspending before the contract works its way out isn't a virtue.

Yeah, Denver may end up being in cap hell sooner than GB. GB under Thompson may never enter cap hell at all. And that to me is irrelevant. What matters is what approach is likely to maximize the likelihood of having championship-quality teams for multiple years.

But apart from my desire as a fan for Elway, Manning, and company to fall on their ass, I think it is likely that this Denver team is likely to be more of a contender for longer before they end up in cap hell. And, apart from my desire as a Packer fan for this team to get to the SB every year, I don't see this team as close at all to being that consistent championship contender. Given the competition of the NFC North, the playoffs, sure. Get past one-and-done? -- I'd rather bet on drawing to an inside straight than draft-and-develop-and-insist-on-bargain-and-never-ever-overpay-for-anyone-else's-FAs.

Rodgers is a better quarterback than Manning ever has been. Ted Thompson and company should be doing everything they can do that he has more championship chances to prove it.

Are they?

Not in my opinion. Not so far in his tenure as GB's starting quarterback.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

The thing about NOT jumping in the first couple of days is that most of the best ones get gone - Ward and Byrd at the top of the list.

I've had enough. The vast majority of posters on here the last 72 hours have whined non stop about the actions of a team that has won the Super Bowl in the last few years, has been a consistent playoff team and has a MVP in his prime. You're frustrated that the Packers aren't doing what you think is necessary to get from being really good to World Champions. Like any of us know squat.

But the part that really annoys me is that some of you appear willing to sell out the future of the team for slightly improving the odds that the Packers win the Super Bowl. YOU WHINE LIKE 7 YR OLD GIRLS WHEN WE LOSE CLOSE PLAYOFF GAMES. THE THOUGHT THAT YOU WOULD BE OK WITH A 3-13 SEASON IS LAUGHABLE.

Either you all have only been fans for a few years or you have forgotten what the other side feels like. Rejoice because this is the 2nd greatest era of Packer football and it won't last. Then you'll really have something to complain about!

Do you think that New Orleans will care how much they paid Byrd if he makes the pro bowl 3 or 4 years in a row.

Hell yeah, the Packers are good - somebody mentioned "top 4-5 teams", we are THAT good right now - sorry defense, shaky O-Line, and all. WHY? Almost entirely because of Aaron Rodgers. The rest of the team - as I was probably the first to say, got exposed last season.

Nobody here wants Ted Thompson to plunge head first into the free agent market; Probably nobody here wants him fired; Probably most people here are on board for the most part with "draft and develop"; But Thompson's mania for not going after quality FAs to fill holes the team has is an absolute classic case of too much of a good thing.

Do you want people to NOT complain about the farting away of this "2nd Greatest Packer Era"?

I do not know how you could improve upon the Starr Packers era. It was a traditional "right" when so much seemed to be going wrong in this country. It was tradition. It was the end result of the things you were taught in school and church. The Green Bay Packers defined tradition and toughness. It WAS something people said... "He's as tough as a Green Bay Packer." That MEANT something, back then.

Favre got a HUGE pass during a lot of his career due to the 28 year drought suffered by the fan base. If you are younger than the drought, you no habla, if you are not, you completely understand, Favre ain't SHIT to that older cadre, now that we got RODGERS!

RODGERS has been us old guys dream. He's humble, (Comparatively) smart , accurate, yada yada yada-- He's Bart Starr with a gun for an arm Us old guys could pay him no more higher compliment, period.

I LIKE HIM He reminds me of Bart Starr.

Martha Careful (18h) : thank you Mucky for sticking up for me
Martha Careful (18h) : some of those people are smarter than you zero. However Pete Carroll is not
Mucky Tundra (21h) : Rude!
beast (22h) : Martha? 😋
Zero2Cool (24-Jan) : Raiders hired someone from the elderly home.
dfosterf (24-Jan) : I'm going with a combination of the two.
beast (24-Jan) : Either the Cowboys have no idea what they're doing, or they're targeting their former OC, currently the Eagles OC
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Fake news. Cowboys say no
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Mystery candidate in the Cowboys head coaching search believed to be Packers ST Coordinator Rich Bisaccia.
beast (23-Jan) : Also why do both NYC teams have absolutely horrible OL for over a decade?
beast (23-Jan) : I wonder why the Jets always hire defensive coaches to be head coach
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Aaron Glenn Planning To Take Jets HC Job
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Martha- C'est mon boulot! 😁
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Thank you
wpr (22-Jan) : Z, glad you are feeling better.
wpr (22-Jan) : My son and D-I-L work for UM. It's a way to pick on them.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Thank you. I rarely get sick, and even more rarely sick to the point I can't work.
wpr (22-Jan) : Beast- back to yesterday, I CAN say OSU your have been Michigan IF the odds of making the playoffs were more urgent.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : I've been near death ill last several days, finally feel less dead and site issues.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : It is a big deal. This host is having issues. It's frustrating.
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : just kidding...it was down
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : and there's the dagger
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooo 8 point game with 4 minutes to go!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooooooohhhhhh he missed!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
