Grant's obviously got the talent or he wouldn't have shown like he did last year or ground out 1200 yards this year

1200 yards is an average of 75 yards a game. It's not all that terribly impressive in a 16-game season. Remember, he only averaged 3.7 yards per carry -- hardly stellar.

Given the time he missed, it's a reasonable total. Hell, 59 more yards and he would have ended up top 5 in the NFC for the year.

I'm already on record multiple times this season saying that I don't like the way he looked this year (and for perspective, I'm an ex HB myself, so that's the position about which I'm the most hyper-critical) - he went down at the first touch most times, and overall just looked flat.

But he did produce.

What's surprising about that number is that B-Jack avg. about a yard and a half more than Grant, which is a big difference.

How many carries for a loss did Grant have? I bet that contributed quite a bit to his lower average. Jackson is quicker in the backfield and fought more to get back to the LOS or pick up a yard or two.

According to the end-of-season stats posted on Packers.com , Grant averaged 3.9 yards per carry.

Interestingly enough, guess who averaged 3.7 ypc?

Aaron Rodgers!

Given the time he missed, it's a reasonable total.

Sure he did. But his hammy wasn't right, and we all know it. And our Oline wasn't helping him out either - Grant's a one-cut back, and thus more dependent on the line than someone like BJack, who's got more wiggle and more ability to create on the fly. And what do coaches love in a ZBS? A one-cut back. Hit the hole, roll downhill. If the hole isn't there or isn't where it's supposed to be, then he's going to have a harder time.

Again, he didn't show me much to like this year, but he was out there contributing. Much like the LB corps, I'm not ready to say he shouldn't be our guy yet. I'm just not the type to want heads rolling after one messed-up season.

BJack has earned more touches, and I'd like to see him get them next year. I also want to see what Lumpkin can do next year. But I also think Grant should be a part of that mix, until he proves that he doesn't have it. One midly below-par season isn't enough evidence for me.

The O-line needs an upgrade, and we need a feature back. We have three average running backs and none of them are a game changer. There isn't anyone out there who is afraid of our running game.

Not to make excuses for Grant but he did injure his hammy this year. Now, I was always that guy who was like ahh, come on you wimp...until 4 weeks ago, when I pulled my hamstring training. Its not fun and that could contribute to his lack of running this year. I am at week 5 now, still deep bruising and my muscle is still very tender.
I'm not comparing the two injuries, an injured hammy is an injured hammy though. Add the weak offensive line and you have no running game.

I still agree with Cheesey though, give Wynn a chance.

Wynn gave us in the Lions game what Grant has been unable to do this year. The big, long TD run. Grant had a ton of them last year, and dropped down to none this year.

If Wynn has changed ways it could be a really tough camp battle between Jackson, Wynn and Grant. And also a pretty deep RB corp.

I'm almost certain Ryan Grant could have made that run as well. If he had those kind of holes then he'd be much better.

I think something that tends to go a little unnoticed in the whole run game discussion is the pretty obvious tendancies the packers have with their running backs. You can usually see from a mile away, which type of play(run or pass) they are going to run by who is in the game. If grant is in, chances are very good that it will be a run, he isn't really much of a threat in the passing game, so teams load up to stop the run. If you've got jackson in there, chances are very good that it is a passing situation, and seeing how wynn has basically been filling jackson's role when he's been in, same story.

Keeping all of this in mind, i think its simple to see why Jackson/Wynn have had success when they've been in. Now of course this sort of logic is not always the case, but i think if you went back and looked through a lot of the film, it would tend to be the norm. More than anything this suggests that the packers need to be more creative with their personnel, and more willing to try Jackson/Wynn on 1st and 2nd down, and just plain try them when Grant isnt having much success. I think the unwillingness to give either of the other two backs a shot when Grant is being continually stuffed was one of the greater downfalls of the 08 packers.

Really I think all 3 of them are quality players, and all of them have shown it at one time or another, but if you look at a team like the Giants, who have great success using 2 or even three backs, you see them switch it up, and really go with what is working "now" instead of just trying to force feed "their guy" just because he is "their guy", even when it isn't working.

I don't know what was up with the fact that they wouldn't use other running backs from time to time. It was pretty frustrating to watch.
